21st October 1966 52 years ago today @ 09.15am, 116 children and 28 adults died when Tip No7 collapsed and engulfed Pantglas school in Aberfan. This tip had been built on a stream and spring by the NCB, contravening all the rules and regulations for building such tips. It was also over 34 metres high, when the maximum height was only 20 metres. The NCB nor any of its employees were ever prosecuted. The people of Aberfan fought for 3 years to have the remaining tips removed, but the NCB refused to pay, and it was only after the government provided grants that they were eventually removed. They even made the Aberfan memorial fund pay £150,000 towards the tips removal after initially demanding £750,000!!!! Many years later the government paid the £150,000 back into the fund. RIP to the 116 children, and 28 adults who died through negligence and greed by the NCB [Post edited 21 Oct 2018 15:33]
