220 jobs axed with closure of Llanelli auto parts plant on 18:02 - Nov 6 by Dyfnant | Only 15% of their production remains in the Uk because all the car production jobs have relocated outside of the UK, way before Brexit was even made up. |
That's a bit too simplistic. The British car manufacturing industry got crushed in the 70s and early 80s. Absolutely crushed, but that left lots of skilled labour looking for work. Some managers knew how to get quality control right and slowly but steadily the industry started to revive. Then foreign companies like Honda, Nissan, Toyota started to bring back serious volume production, while parts thrived, and today the industry is booming and again a signifiant employer and export force. Buh-bye says Professor Patrick Minford, however, because to his credit he recognises that a UK outside the single market is not a suitable home for global manufacturers with global supply chains. Shame. This place is turning into a parady of itself. People arguing against statements made by the company itself, all very funny (but not the situation for those involved, obviously).

That makes sense, since Britain has not yet finally pulled the lever on the gallows it is standing comfortably noosed upon. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ". . .The company's regional chief executive, Juergen Ziegler, added: "A global business needs to regularly review market conditions and strive to optimise its footprint across different regions. "The proposed measures we have taken for the UK reflect this business reality. However, we remain committed to keeping certain activities in the UK, a country that will continue to be important to us."" |
So if it is announced that Brexit is cancelled tomorrow, will this company then stay open in Llanelli?

Large companies typically have shareholders, and make capital budgeting and production planning decisions years in advance. They can only put things on hold for so long waiting for dishonest infantile power hungry politicians to make basic decisions.

220 jobs axed with closure of Llanelli auto parts plant on 18:51 - Nov 6 with 2037 views | majorraglan | Whilst it would appear the closure is due to a number of factors, some production is being moved to lower cost production centres such as China, however countries like Germany and the US are likely to have higher costs. Whatever anyone’s view on the exact reason, South West Wales can ill afford to lose 220 jobs such as those that are being lost. Several years ago I was at an event where the MD of Ina Bearings gave a talk, he was very passionate about the company and how hard the staff had worked to turn the plants fortunes around and become the “supplier of choice” for one of the major car manufactures. He was very passionate about the company and the manufacturing industry in Wales, he was a really good guy and someone who wanted Wales to succeed. It’s a shame that people are squabbling whilst others are about to lose their jobs. It’s a big blow to Gorseinon, Llanelli and the greater Swansea Bay Area and our kids future [Post edited 6 Nov 2018 18:52]

Probably not. The ship has probably sailed now - plans too far advanced etc. What it would mean is that all the companies that are currently thinking of doing the same thing for the same reasons may not do so.

The company themselves said it was the reason that they had decided to do this at this time. That doesn’t of course mean it wouldn’t have happened in the future anyway, but surely they know why they have done this? It’s terrible news for the people affected.

yes, they said it was 'one of the reasons' for the closure but they brought it forward due to uncertainty. They could have boomed after Brexit, there is no certainty either way. [Post edited 7 Nov 2018 7:01]

I used to work at Dura Cables, Bynea, that closed because they wanted to move to the Czech Republic to cut costs, Ford, Nissan and PSA Group didn't want the company to move production there due to quality concerns. Anyway, they shut the plant and production moved to save money. within a few years the com many lost the contract and a competitor company in Baglan mopped up the contract. Dura had fended them off whilst they made the cables in the UK. Don't blame Brexit for everything, these things are decided well in advance, not aimed at you Major. [Post edited 7 Nov 2018 6:58]

Exactly. Did you not know that Thatcher closed the mines down since she knew Brexit would happen 30 odd years later? And the utilities, banks, etc would move their call centres abroad years ago for the same reason. These remoaners are jumping on absolutely anything and blaming Brexit it shows their futile desperation. 142 AFLI SIUYRL

You can’t blame the company really, the country is run by power crazed loons, I wouldn’t risk my company in the hands of these idiots. As for the people of Llanelli, got to feel for the ones that voted remain. I wonder how many jobs have gone already in the uk, and the amount of money wasted on something that is completely pointless.

Yes it is entirely the companies fault, it has nothing to do with Westminster or Cardiff who have just given Aston Martin a Zillion to make cars that nobody i know will be able to run and as far as i can fathom don't use tappets. As for feeling sorry for the people of LLanelli who voted remain even after the money wasted on leaflets trying to convince us all to stay that could have and should have been utilised better elsewhere. And as for your last sentence what are you talking about employment is at a record high and wages are starting to rise slowly. When we joined it was a Common Market policy not some elite cabal where they can rule over a continent. So using your logic, looking down the M4 from the Indian owned steelworks to LLanelli the amount of industry that has disappeared is staggering all gone whilst members of the EU power crazed loons.
