Best I can come up with, is the whole war was a tragedy of epic proportions, which undoubtedly changed the lives of families all over the globe forever.

I read someone's comment on a online newspaper comments section questioning who suffered the most?.... i.e. the soldiers that died, the ones that got badly injured or the one's that survived and got home physically unscathed and had to suffer the memory of it all until the day they died. I found that really profound! | |

My grandfather and his friend actually got captured by Germans on horseback in WW1. They let them go because they could see they were kids...he was 15.

My great grandfather was in the battle of the Somme.. somehow survived when people who were around him dropped like pinballs in bowling apparently.

Agree with all the above comments, for anyone interested in this period the national library of Wales do an online view of every newspaper printed in Wales during this time.
I recently did some searches for my great uncle receiving an award from his village whilst home on leave following his award of medals during the battle of Arras.
The newspapers of that period are an entertaining read in particular the court reports.

That’s what gets me. How those like your Mrs Grandad never spoke of it. God knows what he must have been going through emotionally on his own.
