"They Shall Not Grow Old." on 21:35 - Nov 12 with 2562 views | jack2jack | Very well put together. Can't really find the words to describe how I felt after watching last night. Best I can come up with, is the whole war was a tragedy of epic proportions, which undoubtedly changed the lives of families all over the globe forever. RIP to all the brave souls who lost their lives, and continue to do so to this day.

What struck me alongside the sadness of it all was the human respect many British soldiers expressed for the German soldiers.

Absolutely, it seemed to me that towards the end, everyone had just had enough of the slaughter, and were looking at themselves in a mirror if you like, just young lads, killing young lads. It was truly humbling to watch.

Apart from the Prussians.
| Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. |

It was the Germans who disliked the Prussians.

Me too! Seeing them mixing together whilst being more than happy to be in each other's company and seeing joking with each other and seeing them swapping and wearing their hats was moving.

I read someone's comment on a online newspaper comments section questioning who suffered the most?.... i.e. the soldiers that died, the ones that got badly injured or the one's that survived and got home physically unscathed and had to suffer the memory of it all until the day they died. I found that really profound!

Personally I would find I difficult to comprehend how anyone involved didn't suffer, regardless how it ended for them, I get where they are coming from though.

"They Shall Not Grow Old." on 20:12 - Nov 13 with 2133 views | Lord_Bony | Very good program that. Peter Jackson is a master film maker. My grandfather and his friend actually got captured by Germans on horseback in WW1. They let them go because they could see they were kids...he was 15. Rip to the soldiers on all sides from this terrible war of attrition.

"They Shall Not Grow Old." on 20:55 - Nov 18 with 1943 views | Dippy | My great grandfather was in the battle of the Somme.. somehow survived when people who were around him dropped like pinballs in bowling apparently. They think there was a 40 percent survival rate whilst going over the top.

I recently did some searches for my great uncle receiving an award from his village whilst home on leave following his award of medals during the battle of Arras. The newspapers of that period are an entertaining read in particular the court reports. https://newspapers.library.wales/view/4615472/4615474/17/Phillips%20Fernhill

My wife’s grandad was part of that battalion in the 2WW. He got all sorts of medals for his bravery as he led young men into battle when even his own captain had lost his mind. He was never the same after it, never spoke of the battles and left his old life and wife behind. Traumatic

That’s what gets me. How those like your Mrs Grandad never spoke of it. God knows what he must have been going through emotionally on his own. God bless him and everyone else who fought in both world wars.
