A Defensive Midfielder 10:02 - Dec 24 with 577 views | westwalesed | To summarise, whether it be: 1) we are conceding too many; 2) we are a soft touch; 3) Joe needs some help in front of him; 4) Fer is too lazy; etc etc we need a ball winning Def Mid.

He can get away with lapses in concentration further forward, where he just has to burst into action for short periods. He’s very good when he can use his physicality and dribbling to burst past players and open up defences. Holding position, staying alert, making tackles and protecting the players behind him just st isn’t his game.

Woods stats this season suggest he wasn't the answer. Stoke are conceding more than a goal a game recently and he's being outperformed defensively by Matt Grimes, who makes more tackles, interceptions, headers and clearances per game (0.1 less blocks). Plus twice as many key passes and a lot less "UnsTch" (ball control errors). Fer makes 50% more tackles than Woods... and a lot more fouls.

Woods may well not have been the answer. He was just the player Potter wanted. A specialist defensive midfielder definitely was/is.
