Well done the Tories and just goes to show there is plenty of work for those who want it.

No doubt we will get the envious work shy lefties along trying to put a negative spin on this great achievement soon. But hey they will never change will they ?

This is a disgraceful state of affairs, it’s not far off the kind of thing you see in some parts of the world (usually the developing world) where you see people turning out in the morning, standing in a line of similar people trying to secure work for that day.

Shocking.

I would rather be in the UK than the socialist utopias of Zimbabwe and Venezuela.

Yep, won't be long either. Tories don't like all those workers rights enjoyed in the EU.

Which workers rights have the Conservatives repealed since they have been in Government?

So is it better to not have a job then?

In some cases yes. Was speaking to someone just the other day who decided to jack in their job because after childcare costs they'd be taking home about £20 per day for a full-time job. Just not worth doing - better to stay at home, rely on a partner's income and spend time with the kid(s).

I imagine the same issue could arise with people who could only get limited hours on crap wages - maybe they're better off financially on benefits?

Probably a good idea to look after your own children than pay someone to do it for you.

Well yes, I'm sure that was a big part of their decision in that case. Don't disagree. I did the same when my eldest was young - jacked work in for 18 months as I had a sh*tty commute, didn't think it was worth the hassle and we could just about get by on 1 wage, although it was tough.

Kids benefit from being with other kids from an early age too though of course, so it can be swings and roundabouts.

They can't because they're protected by EU law.

I'm confused, we've been hearing stories that polish builders were undercutting our own and lowering the salaries for everyone. We've also heard how the northern areas are suffering and generally forgotten about by the southern elite which is why they felt they needed to take drastic action to vote us out of the EU and slow down the forces of globalization which was threatening their very existence.

But today i'm hearing, that its never been so good for jobs in this country and builders have never had it so good. Salaries range between 40k and 90k for builders, sparkies and plumbers and the latest advice is that you should pick a tradesman who is available to work the next day. All the decent one have a huge back log of work. All this i may add whilst being and still currently being a member of the EUSSR.

So which is it?

You must be confused not having heard about stuff like the "pay the rate" protest in Port Talbot by a rather left wing union because its skilled membership (denied employment) had to compete with minimum wage contractors from Eastern Europe?

And I guess living in Battersea? You were unable to commute to the Bovis Land Lease and Simons Construction developments (on same site) in Fforestfach where many skilled U.K jobs were stolen by minimum wage cheap labour East European Migrants?

And I guess you have not visited (Swansea) Jobcentre Plus recently for advertised Swansea construction industry jobs which are made up almost entirely of agency jobs! Can you please direct the people of Swansea (not Battersea) to this most magnificent mountain of relentless opportunity and money....... Up to £90,000 a year in Swansea? Wow! Links please!

Don’t bother, these Londoners are living in a bubble. Everything outside the M25 is irrelevant to them.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

Now if he is one of 'Metropolitan Elite'?

I'm under no illusion that things are any where near as rosy all round as Pikey is making out. But i am confused by the news output from right wing press which appears to pump out conflicting news tailored to suit whatever Brexit argument they're tackling at the time.

And no i don't live in Battersea. I did once for about a year about 12 years ago.

You won't find that salary in a job center. That salary is commanded by people who are their own bosses and have a couple of employees. But trades people are charging a day rate of up to £200 and more, and that's well in excess of 40K a year.

Many of non self employed people in Swansea are now waiting with bated breath and eager anticipation for links offering employment earning £200 a day or more! Please I implore you to provide the portal of most rewarding opportunity. Please can you also contact UNITE that took part in the Margam Green Energy Plant "Pay the rate protest" so that its members can have opportunity also!

As i said, i don't think the employment prospects for people in this country are anywhere near as rosy as Pikey is making out.

But what i was alluring to in my original post was that we have brexit backing rags claiming that wages are being driven down.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3369760/Migration-DOES-depress-wages-lo

...and now the same rag is reporting that the federation of master builders saying there's a national shortage of builders.

"Research by the federation puts the average annual salary of a trained bricklayer at just over £42,000.

However it says those in areas of high demand can earn around £90,000 a year. The UK average for a plumber is £48,675 and £47,265 for an electrician.

Mr Berry said: ‘We need to be training more UK-born apprentices to reduce future reliance on migrant workers from Europe, or else the construction sector will grind to a halt.’

The Construction Industry Training Board estimates the UK needs an extra 35,000 builders and tradesmen each year between now and 2020.

The National Federation of Builders warned new immigration proposals — restricting people who earn less than £30,000 a year from coming to the UK — will block foreign tradesmen."

I think you'll find my points were specifically made about the following: Planet Earth subcontractors whom are through necessity forced to take on self employed status (Card carrying) and sadly have to administer their own taxes/NI..... Self employed but without owning any business whatsoever e.g. not advertised in the Yellow Pages and can end up with equal or even worse conditions/pay to ordinary workers.

I also include agency workers, zero hour contracted, temporary and other non business owning employees. The tradesperson required there with yourself have extensive overheads that eat into wages i.e white vans, skips, plant tool hire, employees, office staff, advertising costs, accountants fees, material-equipment purchase overheads. I suggest you phone Yellow Pages!

So if the average is £42,000 and in some areas people earn £90,000 that means in some areas brickies are earning peanuts. Your stats also fail to mention hours worked, working away from home or not, employed or self employed etc. £42,000 for someone working 7 12s 300 miles from home is an awful wage. Foreign tradesman shouldn’t be coming anywhere near our jobs unless it’s absolutely necessary, and in the most part it’s not.

Quibble with the numbers all you want Jango, but they're not my stats, they're The National Federation of Builders figures on the UK as a whole and is being reported in the Brexit cheerleading rag, the Daily Mail. I claim no ownership over these numbers (and for Wingstamdwoods benefit, have never once claimed that a £90,000 salary can be had in Swansea for a brickie).

The thrust of the article is that we're short of trademen in this country as is, and that's before we're about to close the door on freedom of movement (Theresa Mays words, not mine). The country apparently needs 35000 new tradespeople a year to keep up with demand. Couple this with Pikey Pauls contribution to this thread, and we're apparently in boom time Britain.

But I'm confused as to what i'm supposed to believe, because this same paper reports that cheap foreign labour is the source of driving down our collective wages. which flies in the face of what this article is saying.
