Players working with outside trainers 22:28 - Jan 24 with 1220 viewsjasper_T

You hear a lot about players going out on their own and hiring nutritionists, personal trainers etc. these days. Here's Yan Dhanda working on some bizarre drill with some dude he's hired.

Was it Carvahal who was complaining about stuff like that? Surely the club should be in charge on what training a player does/doesn't do? Or is it ultimately the responsibility of the player to do what they believe is right for themselves and their career (and if that conflicts with the club's thoughts on periodisation/rest & recovery so be it)?

The gym work videos the club puts out are pretty embarrassing but I would have thought it was their prerogative to manage what players put themselves through. Will Maiwayfitness foot the wage bill if Dhanda pulls up with a muscle injury in his next game and can't play for a stretch?

It's run by Carl Mainwaring. Maybe has a link up of some sort being an ex Swan.
Perhaps Potter wants him fitter than he is.

Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

Do we not have staff for that? Didn't we build all these new facilities?

It seems strange to me that a player would have to look outside a professional club to develop themselves. But maybe just shows that football in this country still has a long, long way to go in terms of sports science and performance analysis. There are managers out there still doing long runs and no ball work during the first weeks of preseason after all. Compared to how things are managed in college football in the States we're living in the stone ages.

Some players still drink a few midweek pints and think it doesn't make a difference.

You would think that every training and medical facility is in place at the club.

Great to see!! Maybe some trainer can also work on defence, crossing, shooting.

Billy Reid said last week that despite Dhanda's good start for us, needs to work on his strength and conditioning before being a regular in the first team. He said he's on programmes etc within the club, he's decided to do a bit outside aswell by the looks, can't see a problem with it personally.

How do you know that the club hasn't approved and perhaps even paid for this additional strength and conditioning training?

I think it's great to see our young players putting in the extra work required to make the grade.

Of course I don't know that. The question then becomes why, as we invested in category one coaching and facilities at great expense. There's a commitment to spend x amount each year to provide the best standards for our young players to develop.

The reality is that equation isn't as simple as more work = more fit = better player. Training has to be structured around match day performance, injury prevention, and trainers working at cross purposes is rarely beneficial (too many c(r)ooks in PT terms).

Carvalhal in October: "Players now are more selfish, they live in a personal world. Football is also damaging players in this way. Another one is personal training, it is unbelievable. They don't know what they are doing.

"This is a big enemy of the manager. I have experience at Swansea of a player who injured his knee, he was training at home two days before a game with a personal trainer - who is responsible for that? Players think this is charming, it looks nice to have a personal trainer but it is not connected with the manager and what he is doing during the days of the week."

Category One status cost Sunderland £4m a year. Qualification is judged on investment in facilities, coaching and welfare (it's not results-based).

Surely there's enough there to get Yan doing his 5x5 squats and a few protein shakes.
