New Parkway Station 20:24 - Feb 6 with 12280 viewsPrivate_Partz

Cairns and a few 'transport experts' from Cardiff are pushing for a new Super Parkway station to be built at Felindre.
On the face of it some transport infastructure development in this area is rare, fine and dandy.
Unfortunately this will be situated on the branch line that bypasses Swansea and would effectively turn Neath and Swansea High Street stations into branch line halts.
Bristol Parkway links to the City Centre. The spanking new Cardiff Parkway version will do the same.
Not so with this Parkway as you would have to change at Neath (if the train stopped there) to get to Swansea HS.
This is reflected in the potential naming of the station which WOL call 'West Wales Parkway'.
Looks to me like a plan to marginalise Swansea further and turn the City and West Wales into commuter suburbs of Cardiff.
The Swansea Council Leader appears to be aware of this but it something James, Hedges and the rest of us should keep an eye on.
Any developments such as this should link into proposed Swansea Metro, if it ever gets off the ground

After Swansea most trains down to Pembs are just 2 carriages ....it puts anyone who has a car off from using them.
Open up St.Clears station and market the railways properly.
This then would possibly lower the congestion from Carmarthen up during rush hour.
But then the WAG ain't interested after Cardiff are they?

Imagine if beeching had never happened and all those little lines all over Wales were running and all lines were electrified. What an amazing way to see our country instead of being stuck in traffic everywhere. Dreams eh.

I've worked in the rail industry since Jesus was a boy and this will never happen it's not cost effective, when it comes to anything new on the railway and its infrastructure related think of a number and put a load more zeros on the end of it.Past governments treated BR as a cash cow draining it of money that's why its in a right sh1t state, we are still working with Victorian infrastructure in many parts of the country why do you think they privatised it ? The railway is on its knees and are still paying for things that should have been done decades ago, a bit of disruption and the whole network fails because it's being run at its capacity every single day there is no room for error. The biggest down fall for us is we are an end of the line City miles away from London... An example the CWL line from Swansea to Shrewsbury is massively funded by the Welsh Assembly and it would close over night if they stopped pumping cash into it because the rail companies wouldn't because it loses money hand over fist.

They could stick an airport there to go with the railway station. It'd be a damn site better situated than Cardiff or Bristol for a lot of SouthWales folk.

It'd be a better use of all the grant money than half arsed IT training schemes, relentless digging up of the roads, laying new slabs, and installing traffic lights that make the traffic worse.

Privatising the railways didn't bring extra investment. The west coast line being an example. It caused the collapse of the Private firm Railtrack

I worked for Railtrack and they were a capitalist feck up of all time and cost lives not just money.
Network Rail who I worked for as well are just a polished version (the government) charging train companies gazillions of pounds to run trains on the network with massive restrictions and unrealistic targets which is now leading to train companies handing back the keys to their franchises. The whole railway will come back in house to the government eventually

What happened with Railtrack when it privatised is they released many in house engineers and operational manager, they then hired firms of consultants who didn't have the experience that the former BR engineers had. They underestimated the cost of renewing the West coast line by promising they would remove the old signalling and replace it with the new moving block signalling system. That system had never worked on any main line, and to this day it still doesn't. They also signed contracts with Virgin which they couldn't keep to.All this eventually brought the company down

There should be a railway line that bypasses Cardiff and goes straight to Newport and then change for London or Bristol TM or Gloucester or Cwmbran there

Aye...it gets quite a few railway "tourists" now apparently. Think it's the smallest station in Wales...might be wrong...or smallest number of passengers?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-46209535

Annual rail passenger usage*
2013/14 Increase 240
2014/15 Decrease 110
2015/16 Increase 132
2016/17 Increase 228
2017/18 Increase 1,846

Common sense has gone awol both at government, whitehall, and CEO level for what seems to be many years now. If the ordinary guy on the street wreaked havoc and destruction with kamikaze lunacy and gross incompetence/negligence the end result would be instant dismissal without obscene reward.

It pays to fail for the guys who create the mess.....There is no deterrent!

A case of? Incompetence is rewarded with mega millions i.e. Lord Simpson (Marconi), Fred The Shred (Royal Bank Of Scotland), Matt Ridley (Northern Rock), Peter Crook (Provident Financial) etc, etc, etc. Huge payoffs for overseeing complete disaster after another complete disaster.

The same applies to government and Whitehall also e.g. the likes of John Prescott wasting £2.2 billion and being rewarded with a seat in the House of Lords, w@nkers responsible for sending soldiers out in soft skinned land rovers and without body armour, the appalling downsides from the national disgrace that is privatisation etc, etc, etc. The country has fallen victim to many a shyster, thats why its in the state it is now.

The lack of movement on a Swansea metro is noteworthy. Would be far less work, and far cheaper than the Cardiff one. 90+% of the track is already in place, and would just need stations and obviously small commuter trains to service them.

The Swansea District Line alone runs through Pontlliw, Tircoed, Felindre, llangefelach, Morriston, Tregof village, Coed Darcy, Jersey Marine then down past Amazon and the Bay Campus, then Port Tennant and SA1. But it has no stations on it and isn’t used for passenger services! There are numerous large housing developments growing every year along this route, so the roads in these areas are only going to get busier and more congested.

And it’s the same scenario with the Neath Valley lines that are only used for freight. Can’t see it happening anytime soon with the WAG spending £billions on the Cardiff Metro. Not even if the Swansea version would only be a fraction of the price and effort.

What choice do the people have though? The WG is a disgrace and it's wilfully neglecting anywhere without a CF postcode.

Privatisation is indeed theft, and has been ongoing for centuries.

'The law locks up the man or woman
Who steals the goose off the common
But leaves the greater villain loose
Who steals the common from the goose.

The law demands that we atone
When we take things we do not own
But leaves the lords and ladies fine
Who takes things that are yours and mine.

The poor and wretched don’t escape
If they conspire the law to break;
This must be so but they endure
Those who conspire to make the law.

The law locks up the man or woman
Who steals the goose from off the common
And geese will still a common lack
Till they go and steal it back.'

If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face--forever.

Pity the guy trying to run the quicker trains from Cardiff to london does not extended the service to Swansea.

Oh forgot he is using electric trains which won't work between Swansea and cardiff.

I don’t think the WG had any choice in the matter, the decision was made by central government and that is it. For a first world country we have a shocking infrastructure. Our railways are over priced, over capacity and using substandard historic railway stock, our roads around the metropolitan areas are at capacity. I think the decision to scrap the the M4 relief road was a terrible decision.

On the face of it the decision is bonkers. You have hybrid trains that are heavier (thus speed up wear and tear on the tracks) and require two sets of specialised engineers to maintain them.

Then again, do we expect anything less from these clowns?

Two words.

Chris Grayling.

I can’t believe there is anyone left who thinks this guy is even a semi-competent minister. His track record is appalling. (Pun intended).

So it looks like this is happening then! I think you can kiss goodbye to a rail based Swansea Bay Metro if this goes ahead, as a “Parkway” at Felindre wouldn’t have rail connections, only busses and a car park.

Don’t see the logic myself of trying to reduce traffic on the M4 by getting people to drive to a train station on the M4!
