I had sky broadband originally when living in Bristol, awful experience, slow speed or dropping out completely. Customer services were a shambles.
Was glad when the contract ended, although I read that Virgin are rather shite atm, expecially on the customer service front.
Think they are as bad as each other TBH.. but id never return to sky. [Post edited 26 Feb 2019 13:16]

I have Sky unlimited broadband. I don't have a TV package at all. It does what I need it to, all for £19 per month although they've put a £1 per month increase on recently. |  |

I've been with Virgin Media for many years and the broadband speed is excellent.
Customer service has been pretty good, other than one repeating fault 2 years ago, which was being written off as fault found and cleared, while the problem still existed.
A well worded email to the CEO Tom Mockridge soon solved the problem,. 😂 |  |

Went to BT afterwards and had no problems with them even though it came from the same exchange as Sky broadband came from
Then came you had to pay for football with BT and rental going up so chucked them out as well
I’m now with First Utility and the simplest method of installing broadband connection out of the three and of course no phone rental to pay plus a discount because I’m with their Energy part as well
Found First Utility as good if not better than the other two |  | | |

I have recent experience of both providers. There isn't much to choose in terms of the quality of broadband and I would guess that both providers achieve their performance targets. Customer service on the other hand is a different story; my BT broadband set up was problematic to say the least and having to deal with a myriad of departments is both baffling and frustrating. I found them highly disorganised to the point where they paid me twice for the sign up reward and even then it was for different values. |  |

That's generally correct - the backbone of the UK network is owned and operated by BT. This is all a legacy from British Telecom pre privitisation. 'Last mile' connectivity is then installed by the alternative vendors in certain areas. | |

I moved from Virgin to Sky 18 months ago.
Virgin were fine for many years until I had a problem. Then their customer service was non existent or repeatedly failed to live up to their promises.
Sky have been fine for the 18 months. I haven’t detected any noticeable difference in broadband speed or TV picture quality. I haven’t needed their customer service yet though... |  |

The majority of the UK is connected via a FTTC (fibre to the cabinet) connection, and for most people in the UK, the ‘last mile’ connection ( from the green cabinet in the street) to their homes or premises is via a slow copper connection.
Telecoms providers have been taken to task by the Advertising Standards Authority for false advertising concerning fibre broadband, and not disclosing the slow copper connection as part of the "last mile" | |

I went from BT to Sky 3 years ago and it runs faultlessly in Pembrokeshire, I have had no drop outsold constant 36mps which on wi-fi. When my special price deals are coming to an end I ring and talk to them and they always have set me up on a good deal. Can't fault them at all. |  |

I have my Internet with Plusnet who are also part of BT, they have call ctrs in the UK and I have have been with them for about 6 years. | | | |

I'm waiting for 5g to come here in Carediff (we gets everything in Carediff).
It will mean mobiles will act as high-speed modems replacing the need for phone lines.
If I use this for home and my business that 'll be a lot of savings per year. About £250 for each landline.
Speeds have been promised up to 100 Mbs. Just as good as fiber.
Anyways, back to the op, I prefer Virgin to Sky any day of the week. |  |

As far as I can see Virgin Media broadband is significantly faster than Sky anywhere in the Swansea area, and a friend who gets his TV through Sky has VM broadband for gaming. I am with VM after switching from Sky years ago. The one thing the latter does have to recommend it is that it is possible to negotiate keener deals with Sky for TV than with VM (the reason my friend has both). I get my football mainly from foreign satellite providers. The earlier poster who complained about signal loss in the rain just needs to upgrade to a larger Zone 2 dish. I put one up for my mother and they don't cost much. Without being immodest I can say that mine is a lot bigger.  | | | |

Got a bit off my VM BB, but they would not negotiate on sports channels, leading me to end my TV contract while keeping BB. Sky quoted a much lower price, but I knew their BB is slow in my area. I even quoted the Sky price to VM retentions but they still would not budge. That was about 18 months ago. I have managed since with a motorised dish and also IPTV. [Post edited 26 Feb 2019 20:25]
