I note that the 'You never see a poor bookie' adage has taken a bit of a knock this week with William Hills announcement of a £722m loss for 2018.

I will consider a conditional acceptance of an apology from the beeding hearts on here who were quite adamant that myself and others were just winning off other mug punters rather than gaining a certain degree of satisfaction of rinsing the bookies on a reasonably regular basis.

A couple of months ago as part of my job I was given a tour of a very high end London casino in Mayfair and was given an explanation of how they fought and won a legal claim for failing to pay out to a punter. The subsequent ruling effectively changed the legal definition of theft.

The one thing that stuck in my head was how they knew the punter was cheating......”because we always win.”

Gambling should be seen as a form of entertainment, if you want to spend your hard earned on giving yourself a thrill on the basis that you may win occasionally then why not. But it should be treated as just that a form of entertainment like the cinema, theatre or going to watch the Swans.

Life is an adventure or nothing at all.

I agree.

I enjoy a game of poker and have been playing, occasionally, online for quite a few years. I have kept a record of how much spent and how much won and have done ok over quite a long period of time. I look at it as a source of enjoyment but it is easy to see how one with poor discipline could get addicted.

Good post. It's not my thing really apart from the occasional race day, but I don't see the problem with gambling as long as it's affordable and doesn't start to control people (e.g. either through addition or through illegal activities to try and scam the bookies - e.g. match fixing).
