I didn’t expand his text.

Don’t know what is sensitive in left liberal circles as I’m nothing of the sort.

And I didn’t pull you up for saying Jewish people did not include extremists.

You’re barking up completely the wrong tree if you think I’m some Corbyn loving anti semite.

In fairness I don’t think Jonathan was talking about religion, I think he was referring to communism and Nationalism in its myriad forms rising to meet it in the interbellum period.

Is the correct answer!

I obviously thought it was a clearer parallel than it was. Apologies for the lack of clarification.

I’m sure the rise to power of extremist ideologies was almost totally unthinkable before WW1, but within 2 decades, the geopolitical landscape of Europe was turned on its head. We should not be so naive to believe it could never happen again.

I was making no attempt to evaluate or differentiate between extremist ideologies, as I think all extremist beliefs are dangerous and contemptible whether they are political or religious. They are what happens when people reject rational thought and human decency.

The terrorist attack in New Zealand is shocking, disgusting and very upsetting, as any mass murder of innocent civilians in the name of some nonsense ideology. Horrible to think of all the lives tragically cut short, and the families devastated.

The point of my post was to highlight the seeming increased frequency of such events, and the growth of the rhetoric employed on both sides becoming more normalised in society in general. Honestly I find it deeply worrying to consider the consequences should the escalation and growth of extremism continue on its current trajectory.

Someone sent me a copy of the live feed of the gunmans POV. Truly sickening stuff, young women having their heads blown off etc. The problem is,it is now out there forever in the public domain.
Some will be perversely influenced by it over the coming years,it will certainly desensitise the horrific act for some young wannabes in my opinion.

Many killed had just escaped from the war zone that is Syria.

Very well handled by the NZ Prime Minister I thought.

This thread feels to me like a good example of what happens to debate these days. Serious issues are expanded to include both relevant and less relevant issues, the written word is always open to interpretation and mis-interpretation which results in either sincere or insincere indignation, a trading of insults and linked to the popular issues and interpretations of the day.
The value of the original debate and issues are deminished and replaced by valueless name calling and insults, as a consequence no one really progresses apart from those who enjoy the anti-social approach to social media.

Only 3 pages to this thread , if it was a Muslim going into a church and doing this it would be way into double figures by now .

Or are society just numb to these attacks now ?

Immaculate minutes silence at the principality stadium today.

Sadly, I'm not sure it would be so well observed by a football crowd.

that's just silly. The plane victims had an impeccable minutes silence by us and Millwall only a few weeks ago. Who'd have thought it? I would and it would have been silent again today had one been given

I was thinking the same the other day. She comes across as being down to earth, genuine, approachable and honest, totally the opposite of the rabble sitting at our top table.

There should be no minute silence, unless it’s something to do with issues in this country, otherwise you’d be having a minute silence at every match.

The same compassion people lauded Tony Blair about after Diana snuffed it?

Politicians gonna Politick.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

That’s a little harsh and I can only assume you haven’t seen her reaction to the tragedy. Especially the press conference in the immediate aftermath.

Well one thing, once the media attention and publicity has all gone away the losers/shooters adrenaline rush, self importance and pre-post event euphoria will go with it also. He's sure gonna have some emotionaL come down.

It'll then sink in that he'll have to spend the rest of his life rotting away stewing in his angst along with his 'manifesto' that the outside world will have either completely ignore or forget about. All for nothing!

A guy responsible for shooting a 3 year child in the back along with a life saving surgeon amongst many decent others may also have to look over his shoulder for the rest of his remaining days. I guess some of those bull necked n' tree trunked legged Southern Island Maori gang member types and other prisoners that label child killers as 'nonces' and 'beasts' may make imprisonment a lot less pleasant for the low life also.

Argus!
