If Debenhams closes in the Quadrant... 17:51 - Apr 9 with 3283 views | BrynCartwright | ..it would be massive for Swansea City Centre. I really hope it will not happen but the company has said it needs to close 50 out of 166 stores after they lost nearly 500 million quid last year. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-47864580

If Debenhams closes in the Quadrant... on 18:12 - Apr 9 with 2122 views | jack2jack | Agree Bryn would be a devastating blow to the city centre, the only high profile store we would have left would be M&S. Sadly The High street is dying on its arse throughout Britain. From what I've read Ashley was prepared to step in, albeit to save his millions.

For saying that I don’t think I’ve ever been in Debenhams when it hasn’t been busy.

From my experience it seems to be full of ditherers who move at glacial speed. No wonder it backs up. I wonder how many make it to the tills before closing time. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Because if you ever go into the flagship store in Oxford Street (London that is rather than Swansea), it’s empty. House of Fraser was the same. And yet John Lewis is packed. The stores that offer something different to the online experience will thrive. Those that don’t will shut. Can’t compete with online on price - no overheads (comparatively), far fewer staff, don’t pay tax. If we want Amazon to be the only thing left, we’ll carry on. If we don’t, we’ll have to accept that we pay more (which many can’t do). I’ve stopped using them for books, for example. I use Daunt (my local store), which is more expensive (a lot more) but has knowledgeable staff, a wide selection of different options on display and is a thoroughly pleasurable shopping experience. You can browse, have a seat, take in the dog, chat to others. I’d rather pay more to keep it open. But I’m fortunate that I can do that. Getting Amazon to pay some tax would be a start.
If Debenhams closes in the Quadrant... on 19:19 - Apr 9 with 1966 views | Lord_Bony | The high street is like a Jurassic landscape for the big old dinosaurs who won t change, the new smaller dinosaurs are much more nippy and agile and they are stealing and keeping the food sources all for themselves. As a result the giant, lumbering dinosaurs are dying as they can't compete for the energy source. That's evolution, survival of the fittest, the old species must adapt or die, that sadly,is the natural selection at work for all to see.

Your absolutely correct. There are certain things I will only buy in store, like white goods, TVs and the like, only because, I like to know that if something goes wrong with them, I can go and bang on a desk. And in fairness you can get some good deals in store, for instance I bought something recently at a local store, and they were only too happy to match an online price. Amazon is far too handy and if I fail to source something in Swansea, I will buy online. Times are a changing, but not always for the better.

It’s a lovely shop. I use it all the time. I like to buy books as gifts, and they have staff that can give great advice based on people’s interests, stuff they’ve enjoyed etc etc. I can spend hours in there, the dog likes it as well as she gets fussed over.

Regular books, sure. agree. Virtually every book I've bought last ten years has been related to trade, ie computing. In terms of specialist cutting edge tech books, there's nothing in Cardiff. So in that respect, it's internet or nothing. But it's ok. Queen Street in Cardiff has 456 coffee shops. Yeah, that'll help.

More general than the kind of speciality stuff I need. In that circumstance, t'internet is the best place. "How to use Excel" - sure, they can sell a few copies. Dedicated tech for programming, eh maybe they'd sell one or two every year possibly.

If they can’t shift it they won’t stock it. Fair enough, I suppose. Pre-internet I used to spend months, years even, tracking down obscure titles. The search for some of the limited editions I coveted took on the air of a quest. I used to love it. These days just about anything can be found with a couple of clicks of the mouse. The internet has cost me a feckin’ fortune and untold arguments with ‘er indoors!

If Debenhams closes in the Quadrant... on 20:28 - Apr 9 with 1792 views | MrSwerve | Is it bad that I can’t remember the last time I bought something in a shop (excluding food and bits and bobs from Tesco)? Usually only go out to buy stuff in B&Q, garden centres etc. Even then I’ll look online first if I’m after something in particular. Most of my electrical I’ll buy online too. ‘Walking around the shops’ will die out almost completely in the next 20 years.
