Swansea u23 players have played over 4000 minutes more than any other club... on 20:14 - Apr 25 with 1528 views | DwightYorkeSuperstar | How many other clubs in this division have had the opportunity to spend millions on U23 players? It's not as if these are below par players. James and Rodon are arguably amongst the best in the division. Byers, Asoro, McBurnie and others were brought in for millions, already established as senior players in most cases. I'm not sure if Celina is regarded as U23 however he's another one brought in for millions.

They're good players and many of them have been chosen for those minutes over available senior alternatives. It's certainly no handicap.

Why have Cardiff never produced U23 players with all the money they have spent?

We didn't spend millions on under 23s when in this division though did we? Or are you totally oblivious to what's gone on?? We spent it when we could afford it, and developed the facilities when we could afford it. A large amount of clubs in this league have wealthy owners or have been in premier league. We should be lauded for investment in future even if not all have worked out. Praise the club Dwight. Praise them [Post edited 26 Apr 2019 11:15]

Few other clubs in this division have had the opportunity or desire to spend what we have on development players over the last 5 years, due to our being a PL club all that time, and the academy being seen as part of the relegation insurance policy. Our u23s side was the 4th best in the UK last season, and battered PL2 Div 2 the season before that (and won the cup). It's natural then that we see younger players getting an abnormal number of minutes with us relative to the rest of the EFL (Stoke and West Brom having very different relegation plans). The investment hasn't always been successful or wise but the number of players we brought in for six figure payments dwarfs what other Championship clubs have had access to. And the glass ceiling of the Premier League created a backlog of players across a broader age group that most clubs have available. Norwich bring through teenagers from their development teams to make first team debuts. Players younger than Connor had their chances in the Championship/League One with them and moved onwards and upwards already.

That's very true for some; we've been fortunate to be able to pay to bring in some players (Celina and Asoro), but a lot were also on the cheap - I believe Dan and Byers both joined at the end of their contracts (not sure if compo was paid). Oli was a few hundred thousand . We've been able to spend more than some Championship clubs on building the U23s, but hardly broke the bank. But that doesn't detract from the fact that they are inexperienced at this level and overall have done very well. Byers - 1 senior appearance before joining us Dan - no senior appearances before this season Oli - not exactly masses of experience, less than a full season's worth of games at any level Matt - most experiences of the bunch, but mostly L1 and L2, untried at this level (disastrous loan period at Leeds) Joe - only 12 senior experiences, in L2 CCV - 1 season only, in Championship Asoro - only 27 senior appearances before this season There's a lot of young and/or inexperienced players in this side. Which is an excellent strategy and the club should be applauded. We have invested in youth players who are playing well at this level and have high saleable value due to their age. One of the few things the club has done right in the past few years in terms of transfer strategy. Although there have been mistakes (£1m on Asoro) and not tying James down to a better contract to maximise value this summer. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Also, recruitment of Potter also. The majority of squad we're witnessing were signings made under a much scrutinized scouting department.

DJ cost £72k compensation plus addons for senior appearances. The cost is over £100k now, but obviously a bargain. Same for McBurnie at £300k. It's when you add up the cost of the misses together with the hits that the genuine cost of the recruitment policy is arrived at, though. King, Kinglsey, Blair and Biabi all came for similar fees to Oli. For every Byers on a free there's a Tyler (and Jayden) Reid. Foreign imports come and gone like Plezier, Darame and Paljk. Grimes cost more than Buendia. Over 150 senior games to his name. Improvement has been amazing but it's a bit odd to have him lumped in with the "local kids making their debuts" headline so often. Like when you see Raheem Sterling nominated for Young Player of the Year alongside Brooks.
