We were on an upward trajectory in both of those cases.

There is no doubt Potter has found it more difficult here than expected. Whether that means promises were broken, I don't know. Here's a quote from January:

In a strange way, this reported interest from Brighton may play to our advantage. It would give Potter a bit more leverage to ask for more backing in the summer, if he feels that he needs it.
