Overseas Players 08:03 - May 15 with 1657 viewsstevethejack

Reading the on this day feature on official site and saw the line up of the last game of our first season in the PL. Very significant the lack of overseas players compared to the last couple of seasons in the PL.

Michel Vorm - Dutch
Angel Rangel - Spanish, but with us for years
Steven Caulker - English
Ashley Williams - Welsh
Neil Taylor - Welsh
Joe Allen - Welsh
Leon Britton - English
Gylfi Sigurdsson - Icelandic
(Mark Gower, 88) - English
Nathan Dyer - English
(Wayne Routledge, 79) - English
Danny Graham - English
Scott Sinclair - English

This team under its management at the time would have outplayed the team we put out for Stoke.

I recall reading at the time that the Welsh club in the Premier League had more English players in the starting 11 over the course of the season that any of the other 19 English teams.

That was a team that wore the shirt with pride. The last 2 seasons of our PL tenure were littered with mercenaries and primadonnas who I hope we never see again.

Yes Ki, yes ayew bros..... I'm calling you 3 out especially.

Depends on your definition - to many Dutch and English are just as much overseas!

Probably because there were very few overseas players outside the Premier League.
We had been quite revolutionary in binging in the Three Amigos.
More expensive players weren't coming to Swansea or the lower leagues.
We couldn't afford to buy players - other than Graham & Routledge - the rest had been with us for years, loaned, were dirt cheap or were rejects.

Revolutionary? You must be talking about Wigan and their 3 amigos back in 1995.

Big Tosh said he felt 3 or 4 welsh players always helped with our identity, if they are good enough.

I agree.

Trampie would have been quick to point out the 7 'over-dyke' players.

Its just a ride.

Yes he is.

Rules are there and he qualifies.
As a small nation we need to welcome all qualified players.

Even ‘mighty’ England does the same ....

I am aware that he plays for Wales mate...

He is as Welsh as Vinnie Jones.

You have to use the Welsh spelling:

Vinny Jones
