Has been put into compulsory administration 25000
Jobs at risk cheaper to bail them out or take public than pay the benefits to those affected remind me how many billions the greedy bankers had off the tax payer
Madness not to support manufacturing

Crazy to pay the EU’s £120M carbon tax bill, should’ve made them wait.

I read somewhere that China produced more steel last year than Britain has in it's history?

Certainly they've been dumping cheap steel in the market. US also produce a fair amount.. hence the trade war ongoing.

Nationalise? Not going to happen, can't see a bail out either - haven't they already had a £100m bailout previously?

China might have produced more but the steel was probably shite, we had a load of mild steel from India once and it was terrible to weld on, we ended up sending it back BRITISH BRITISH BRITISH !!!!

Spot on. Awful quality. Nationalise and protect until we have a Government that will protect the industry like other countries do.

"Yossarian- the very sight of the name made him shudder. There were so many esses in it. It just had to be subversive" (Catch 22)

Can't nationalise under EU rules, I do believe?

You believe wrong.

The steel industry would have been helped of course by the EU introducing tariffs on the lower quality Chinese Steel.

Which the UK vetoed.

This situation is a classic example of the state of the economy we will end up with under the type of low regulation environment the arch brexiteers wish to encourage.

A holding company using a Jersey based subsidiary to borrow money at 3%, lending it to the UK manufacturer at 9%, creating a £20m profit in a tax haven and an unsustainable loss in the UK which they want the government to subsidise. On top of trading in carbon credits and being unable to replace them through the EU due to the current lack of agreements, and unable to afford them on the open market due to the huge increase in their cost, leading to the government already making a loan of £120m just weeks ago.

Meanwhile 5,000 people, many of whom voted for this mess despite being repeatedly warned what would happen, find themselves in a precarious position, where the average wage paid to them of £36k can’t easily be replaced in an area where the average wage for the rest of the community is £22k. And another 20,000, also indirectly reliant on the business will also find replacement work difficult to come by, particularly since the other big employer in the same area, has also now changed its mind about investment in its manufacturing capability since the UK won’t be a part of the free market they are reliant on.

What a shambles. Meanwhile Farage, who didn’t bother to vote when the subject of Chinese Steel tariffs was discussed in the parliament he is paid to attend, and who supports the private equity model causing this mess as he is part of the culture that will personally financially benefit from such deregulation, blames the EU by making up lies about them preventing the UK government from helping out.

People will get what they deserve in the end.

In fact, Britain ‘could triple state aid for industry under EU rules’....

Other European countries seem to have little issues with nationalising their industries

I could be here all day listing and debating the reasons going back decades as to why the old Long Products Division has come to this pass. It’s fair to say that despite the noises now coming from Greybull that the prospect of Brexit would be nowhere near the top of that list.

Myopia - Indifference - Betrayal. All charges that could and should be aimed at Westminster.

Make no mistake about it you are now looking at the complete collapse of an entire regional economy. Real people, real consequences. There’s nothing here even remotely amusing.

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

Did Belgium and the Czech Republic vote to leave?

Seeing as ArcelorMittal ( the biggest steel making company in the world) is cutting jobs and production in both countries.
