Fao LondonLisa - Hilary Mantel. 21:58 - May 27 with 2560 views | Lohengrin | Right then, I didn’t forget, I had a brief chat with somebody from her publishers earlier and the third and final instalment of her Thomas Cromwell series is due for release in the first quarter of next year and will be titled ‘The Mirror and the Light. Sorry if you were expecting it earlier, don’t shoot the messenger!

No. That sort of thing doesn’t interest me. I tried to watch the TV adaptation and found it to be very well made but indescribably smug and very tedious.

On another note I had a chat with Fintan O’Toole earlier as well. Very clever chap. You’d have enjoyed that.

I have, I thought both were excellent. Surprised at ECB's reaction, but each to his own. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Not convinced that a Princeton-based Dubliner understands Wales as well as he thinks he does.

In fairness he only mentioned Wales in passing during his talk and then probably out of politeness because he was here.

Fao LondonLisa - Hilary Mantel. on 12:25 - May 28 with 1304 views | GreatBritton | I don't often bother with very carefully researched historical novels but Mantel is very very good. Shut up you tart... I thought the TV adaptation was fab as well. Mark Rylance was brilliant. The books though are really something else.

My pleasure. If she’d been there in person I’d have picked up one her other titles and had her dedicate it and sent it on to you.

I have a signed first edition of the second one (Bringing up the Bodies) that I received as a present! Have you read them? I studied that period at ‘A’ level history (Tudors and Stuarts) and always found it fascinating even then. I hadn’t realised Cromwell’s Welsh links until I read Wolf Hall though. Nor that he was born a stone’s throw from where I live (just over the river in Putney).

I haven’t read either, I’m sorry to say. I may well make the effort now though. Cromwell’s Welsh roots are pretty well documented, Lis. His actual surname was Williams as you probably know.

His sister married a Williams (Morgan Williams]. Not his name though. Edited to add - you really should read them. I think you’d enjoy them. [Post edited 28 May 2019 14:21]

Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m tolerably certain that ‘Cromwell’ was a name adopted for reasons of social prestige after his grandfather, a Williams, married the sister of Thomas Crowell.

I think (trying to remember) that you’re mixing up the two Cromwells. Thomas Cromwell’s sister, married to a Williams, has a son, Richard Williams, who changes his name to Cromwell for political expediency (and joins Thomas Cromwell’s household). His great grandson was Oliver Cromwell (so it’s his name that would have been Williams). Thomas Cromwell’s father was Walter Cromwell, who owned a pub in Putney.

Sounds convoluted enough to be right. There’s a second career beckoning you as a presenter on Who do you think you are?!
