Leanne Wood likens 17,410,742 UK citizens to Nazis. 12:21 - May 29 with 8045 viewsDwightYorkeSuperstar

What a despicable image to share online. That socialist political party murdered millions of people, yet former Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood thinks it's fair to liken them to UK citizens who do not want to be part of the European Union.

Let's hope she never wins the right to represent any of those 17,410,742 people she apparently thinks so lowly of again.

Trouble is, people aren't prepared to have a discussion around the imagery. Whatever you think of her as a person or her politics, Wood is right - it's a very powerful image and may say something about the general state of Europe. There is a rise in right wingism, including some pretty unsavoury elements. We could talk about that and whether it's something we believe is good, or call each other names in the playground and virtue signal like feck in our echo chambers. The choice is ours.

Edit - not really meant a response to your post, sorry Just a general comment.

It’s hyperbole in the extreme.

One of the most violent and efficient killing machines in history.

Farage might be a bit of a bell end but you simply can’t compare the two.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

It's certainly provocative, but the EU elections were across the continent and not just about Farage. This is against a backdrop of rising hate crimes against minority groups, jews being warned they shouldn't wear their kippah caps in public, etc.

There's a lot of hyperbole around for sure, but we also should be afraid to call out signs of genuine fascism when we see it, otherwise we could be sleep walk into something pretty grim.

Wherever would people get the idea Farage shares some traits with the Nazis, eh?

How is not wanting undocumented migrants trekking across 10 safe countries comparable to The Nazis?

Which brings us neatly back to this:

If people are going to behave like Nazis then they shouldn't be surprised when they're called out as Nazis. The answer is fairly simple - if people stop supporting individuals and groups that actively demonise people on the basis of their nationality, ethnicity or faith then they won't get called nazis, racists, xenophobes or bigots.

It’s visually similar to a Nazi propaganda picture, which makes it perfect to be used as propaganda to slur Farage as a Nazi. I don’t believe it is his intention, or the intention of his supporters, to be associated with Nazis. For evidence see his reasoning for abandoning UKIP and their poor election results.

Do you have an argument against Farage and the poster itself, or perhaps his views on immigration?

I'm sure it's not their intention to be slurred with Nazis, but they're using the same play book. His reasoning for abandoning UKIP ws that he'd had his cause taken away from him. Without something to rail against he's nothing.

It sounds like you want to tell people who they should support and who they shouldn’t support. So please do as none of us want to be associated with Nazis.

Which UK parties should we avoid supporting due to their demonisation of others?

The question was asked why that poster was linked to being a Nazi and I pointed out it was because it was so similar to a Nazi propaganda poster.

The poster itself is a dog whistle. A shameful, ugly, sickening dog whistle. It’s a picture of refugees. Us taking or not taking refugees has nothing to do with Brexit. So its only function is to attempt to falsely link ‘brown people’ coming here with EU immigration to get unthinking racists to vote in a certain way.

Btw - if Farage doesn’t want to be associated with the far right, spending today in talks about joining Le Pen’s grouping of far right bigots in the E.U. was probably not the smartest move.

Support whoever you want. You're aware of what Farage was trying to do with that poster (Lisa's post above provides a succinct summary). It's your choice if that's something you want to support.

I wonder if The Brexit Party will make it No1 priority to have one of its candidates stand against her in the future?

It's no surprise to see the same people who lack any empathy towards refugees are also wilfully ignorant of their own country's role in destroying the nations from which these people flee.

The UK already approves of a pitiful % of asylum applications compared to other European countries and its actual refugee population is a mere fraction of countries such as Turkey and Egypt.

It's staggering hubris to suggest there are waves of Arabic people traversing the entire continent for £37 a week.

What do you mean they’re passing through multiple safe countries?

It’s a crossing from Croatia to Slovenia. They’re Syrian refugees.

The 1951 Refugee Convention doesn’t require asylum seekers to apply in the first country they enter. Neither does EU law. The Dublin rules have been suspended (which used to force asylum seekers to apply in the first E.U. country) as they were hugely unfair to, for example, Greece and Italy.

The EU instead have a programme to attempt to share refugees proportionally through the E.U. (lessening the load on Greece and Italy) - the UK is not a participant in that programme.

Edited to add: we do not have a generous welfare system for asylum seekers. In the UK, the weekly allowance for a single adult asylum-seeker is £36.95 per week, lower than many other EU countries. The equivalent weekly rate in France, for example, is c. £58.50.

Elsewhere in the EU, asylum-seekers must be permitted to work if their claims have not been decided within 9 months, although some countries permit this after less time. This does not apply in the UK, where permission to work will not be granted unless 12 months have past and the claim remains undecided. The UK has introduced severe restrictions on what work an asylum-seeker may be permitted to do even if this condition is met.

Detention is used much more extensively in the UK’s asylum system than in other EU countries. Those countries also have time limits on how long a person may be detained under immigration powers, whereas the UK has no time limit.

I have to be honest I didn’t see any ‘brown people’ in the poster. Racists will always see things their way and vote accordingly, but I don’t think the rest of us should have to change our views/behaviour to disassociate from a malignant minority.

Immigration as an issue is an example of this. We all know that racists will be against immigration by default. But does that mean we all have to advocate for open borders regardless of ecological, cultural, societal consequences? Just to prove we’re not racist? Or can we just not be racist and then live our lives without that lense?

I’m sure racists vote for Farage but I’ve seen no evidence that he is racist, nor any examples of him demonising people because of their race. If somebody can share something that suggests otherwise they should do so, as that would change opinions.

I don’t know anything about Le Pen’s grouping, or how that would make Farage “Far Right”. Aren’t they just a grouping that are against the current structure/concept of the EU? What’s wrong with that?

Why is it relevant what border they’re crossing?

Farage was making a broader point about the EU’s failure to process these migrants and the £36.95 figure you have pulled does not take into account housing and access to the NHS etc.

And that’s why it’s pointless having this discussion.

And, indeed, why the whole issue will never be agreed. The two sides of the debate have such a different view in what is and isn’t acceptable that it’s impossible to reunite.

"Hitler preached class warfare, agitating the working class to resist “exploitation” by capitalists , particularly Jewish capitalists, of course. Their programs called for the nationalization of education, health care, transportation, and other major industries. They instituted and vigorously enforced a strict gun control regimen. They encouraged pornography, illegitimacy, and abortion, and they denounced Christians as right-wing fanatics."

https://www.snopes.com/news/2017/09/05/were-nazis-socialists/

That sounds like a socialist ideology to me.

They didn't enforce gun control, they actually relaxed it. Hitler opposed Marxism and Capitalism and private industry flourished under the regime. Hitler favoured competition over cooperation. He also favoured religion over secularism, although his views on religion were rather confusing and complex. He supported Nationalism over Internationalism All in all hardly socialist

You said they were crossing multiple safe countries.

That was a lie. They were crossing one border.

Farage wasn’t making any broader point. He was showing a picture of brown people and saying ‘these people are coming here because of the E.U.’.

And people believe him. Although he is lying.

The figures are quoted on a consistent basis. Refugees have free access to healthcare in France as well. And housing. Your assumption on our welfare system is incorrect. We have pretty much the least generous in the E.U.

How do you think they got to the Croatian border?

That’s complete spin with regards to Farage, you’ve convinced yourself Farage is a reincarnation of Hitler, so there’s probably no point debating you further with regards to the true meaning of the poster.

We do have a generous welfare system, granted France and Germany have better a better welfare system, but it is also disingenuous to suggest that most of Central/Eastern European have a more generous system than ours.

It has nothing to do with being for or against the E.U. That’s irrelevant.
