The Spanish Civil War. 10:42 - Jun 3 with 681 viewsLohengrin

Can any of you remember watching the brilliant Granada documentary series on the Spanish Civil War when it aired in the early ‘80s? Some kind soul has posted up all six episodes on YouTube for you to enjoy again.

If you were too young to catch it first time around treat yourself now. Frank Finlay’s narration is a joy as is the way the production enables protagonists from all the melee of factions to tell their own story and explain their own motivations and disappointments.

Episode one to get you started:

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

Remember it well....worth mentioning several books by Paul Preston on the War. Well worth a read and will be an eye opener to many....especially the Spanish Holocaust. It was incredibly brutal and the Spanish still feel queasy mentioning it..and what fellow Spaniards were willing to do to each other....and not so very long ago.
We also have to put it in context and feel proud that many of our fellow subjects went out and fought for what they believed in...

Thanks, Loh, one for me to check out.

For those of a literary bent, read 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' by Hemmingway to get an interesting human perspective at grass roots level on the conflict.
