Fines for carrying illegal immigrants in your vehicle, also known as “Civil Penalties for Clandestine Entrants” are a big problem for coach companies returning into the UK. We look at what they are?
What are migrant fines?
Every year, many thousands of illegal immigrants hide on coaches heading back to the UK. In many cases, the driver and coach compnay will have no idea that they are on board. If one of these coaches is stopped by the UK Border Force, they will often make both the coach company , and the driver pay a fine. This can happen even if the UK Border Force accept that the driver and coach company had no idea that the illegal immigrants were somewhere on the coach.
How much are the fines?
For every illegal immigrant found, the UK Border Force can issue the coach company operating the coach with a fine of up to £2,000. They can also issue the driver of the coach with a further fine of up to £2,000. If the driver does not pay, the coach company will have to pay both his own and his driver’s fine.
This means that a coach company can pay up to £4,000 for each illegal immigrant found hidden on their coaches.
