Ford planning to close the Bridgend plant - 1,500 jobs at risk on 18:50 - Jun 5 with 2835 views | Wingstandwood | IMO the marked decline of Welsh manufacturing/heavy industry started around the time over a thousand jobs were lost at Duport steel nearly 40 years ago. It's been relentless downhill stuff decade after decade since. Once upon a time (sounds fairy tale stuff today) there were many major employers. Once upon a time (sounds fairy tale stuff today) there were huge workforces employed within these. Once upon a time (sounds fairy tale stuff today) these jobs provided decades of employment in an era when zero-hour-contracts and gig-economy would have been seen as a national disgrace. I now look at how lucky a certain generation were to be born at a certain time cos the young un's and upcoming school leaving generation are left with mere crumbs of what went before.

I agree with you, Loh, but where do car companies chose to locate their post combustion engine plants? In post Brexit GB? Don't make me laugh. Why would they do that? Come and have a look at Ford's massive plant just up the road from me in Valencia.

''I now look at how lucky a certain generation were to be born at a certain time cos the young un's and upcoming school leaving generation are left with mere crumbs of what went before. '' Exactly, I have no time for lots of the generation that had it so good and knowingly voted Thatcher and Blair, it was sheer greed.

In all honesty the new production models would have been destined for one or other of the Eastern accession countries Brexit or not.

You'd be surprised how many want the latest, newest just to brag. I always buy second hand, never had any problems. For me a car is something to get from A to B, get a decent one can run for a long time.

My brother works for Ford's and obviously it is a worry. He is quite cool about it though. He has has a good steady income there for 25 years and says he will get a nice payout and pension. I am glad he isn't too upset and a certain generation will be is a similar position but those who have only been there a few years may well be less relaxed with great big mortgages to pay.

From the article... "The US car firm, which has warned it could slash costs due to Brexit, said it was cutting jobs because it expected demand for the petrol engines made at Bridgend to fall after 2018. Ford’s forecast of waning demand for the petrol engines it makes at Bridgend are understood to be linked to the rise of electric vehicles. The engines are also mostly used in larger cars, which the company believes are becoming less popular as customers opt for smaller, more fuel-efficient models." But, it's ok, Len "fvckwit dinosaur" McCluskey knows better - and doesn't he back Brexit?

It’s where they choose to put their next gen facilities that’s the actual issue though Loh. Like Nissan with the X Trail. Brexit is a massive part of these decisions, but the companies are terrified of saying so, because they don’t want to alienate half of their UK customer base. In fact, for companies like Ford, it’s probably way over half.

It’s also a huge concern for the generation behind them that no longer have those jobs available to them when they reach working age.

Rather a strange statement. I imagine European parliament MPs hate Farage and his merry bunch of fruitcakes, and with good reason. Can't say I've detected any hate for Britain in any othet quarter though. What do you mean exactly, Butt?
