We were talking about this actual subject last week when one of the boys mentioned a girl living in Baglan who used to work for the Swans that died suddenly a couple of years ago.
Apparently she was running a few marathons a week.
I often wonder if the human body is meant to be pushed to those levels. |  |

As well as the joints, it's the ticker. As Darren stated 'a young woman doing a few marathons on a regular basis'! We aren't designed to do these things. We might be one of the most intelligent species on this planet, but physically we are one of the weakest, and to overly exert our natural weaknesses can be as unhealthy as smoking and drinking to excess. | | | |

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think she was running abroad in high temperatures when she collapsed?

Whilst I want to remain this thread a tribute to Justin Edinburgh, some posters have alluded to the extremes a human can withstand.
It's a lottery I believe, but top level pro sportsmen are unique. Unique in the way they train and recover.
I read Harry Redknapp used to make his teams run, and run and run in pre season.
Plus after matches I've been told that PL players are treated like racehorses in that the day after a game they spend an hour or so just walking.
Redgrave the greatest olympian, could not just retire and not do any exercise as his body would have shut down. He had to gradually reduce the calories he took every day and slowly drop the intensity of his training.
So much in this day and age is known on how to get youngsters fit but when they retire I've yet to see any guide book on how to taper off.

Going back to earlier posts I find people doing 3 or 4 marathons a year mad. Didn’t Eddie Izard run so many in a month , like almost one a day???
Insanity that is.
From 40 onwards walk a lot, cycle , swim and watch your diet. Regular check ups with your GP are imperative too. And if you’re smoking 20 a day give it up and save three grand a year!
