The idea that Wales is too small to go it alone is the most perverse counter-factual concept out there. Have a look at this list of countires according to GNI per capita (the best measure of income): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GNI_(nominal)_per_capita

9 of the top 10 countries have population of less than 10 million - 8 with populations of less than 6 million, including the Republic of Ireland. The facts unequivocally show that being small is a distinct advantage when it comes to economic success. Time for a fair few out there to get with the times.

Yes, that was well worth looking at. The GDP in a number of those countries benefits considerably from Oil and Gas deposits, Switzerland enjoyed a phenomenal financial boost thanks to WW2, Ireland's economy was substantially built on low corporation tax, but the game is up for them now, and there is tremendous poverty in parts of Singapore as well as great wealth Many of those countries do have unique economic advantages that we are missing.
If you took the public sector out of the equation in Wales, you'd struggle to find very many full time earners getting over £30k.
The Private sector is so weak it certainly could not come up with the growth necessary to finance and maintain the decent incomes those in the public sector enjoy.
The problem is that we are coming from such a position of weakness.

Dodgy arguments there. Just look at the next 10 wealthiest countries, which includes Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Austria and Sweden - all countries with populations less than 10 million, and none benefiting from oil and gas deposits to the extent that the UK does. You've also got the Netherlands and Belgium with populations of 17 and 11 million respectively - again very little in the way of oil and gas to boost their economies.

It is undoubtedly a challenge for us in Wales to get from where we currently are to Irish or Scandinavian levels of prosperity, but if we continue to have the pathetic dependency mentality that we currently have then we will sink further into relative decline. Having a loser mentality is guaranteed to succeed - in losing. We're better than that.
