Smoke Alarms 10:16 - Jun 29 with 5169 views | Brynmill_Jack | Anyone on here fit or has fitted mains powered smoke alarms? I had mine since 2003 and I’ve had to disable them as they were going off continuously. I took the pp3 batteries out but still they kept going. Is there a battery/transformer inside these units which acts as the main power supply? Can these be changed or are new alarms the best answer? Thanks in advance

Mains powered ones are probably better than just battery and are essential for HMO landlords. Screwfix do them for less than £12 https://www.screwfix.com/p/fireangel-sw1-r-optical-smoke-alarm/396cc

Yes but the cacophony carries on. Jacktar’s advice sounds the simplest, I’ll pick up a CO alarm too as I’m thinking of renting a room out. Next question - can I change them if I knock all the power off or are there any PS sparkies who fancy a quick and easy job? Paid of course

If you're thinking of renting a room out, then it would need to be checked anyway? In that case may as well get someone to do it.

Yes, I’d rather pay someone qualified, especially to fit the CO alarm

Smoke Alarms on 11:26 - Jun 29 with 4195 views | Wingstandwood | I had to replace upstairs and downstairs battery (non mains) carbon monoxide and smoke alarms this year. Many now seem to come supplied with (non adhesive easy fix) screws only to affix to the wall/ceiling, which requires re drilling if the new purchase model is a different make and has different hole centre(s) measurement. I ordered a few of these and they have saved drilling even more holes in the ceiling and with less amount of hassle. *Edit* They are so strong (hold 2KG's of weight) if the underlying wall or ceiling is flaking. falling away, aged or frail these may be unsuitable. Also available in white. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-Sets-BLACK-Velcro-Heavy-Duty-Stick-on-Large-Coins-4 [Post edited 29 Jun 2019 11:47]

I haven’t but these alarms have exceeded their life span by 6 years so I’ll have to replace them to be fair. Thanks for the advice though

Smoke Alarms on 21:31 - Jun 29 with 3979 views | majorraglan | I have mains powered smoke alarms in the house and a couple of years ago, when they were about 10 years old they started going off. Reset them a few times, but after a couple of days they would go off again. Called the electrician back and he believed they could have been going off because of a build up of dust in the sensors over time and recommended we hoover them every now and again. We ended up completely changing the units.

My house is fitted out with three mains smoke alarms fitted in tandem. One was playing up similar to yours so I just changed it, the house and alarms being 11 years old so I figure that I'd had my moneys worth out of it. The replacement was identical in design to the old one so I changed it over myself as the wiring was identical, otherwise I'd have got an electrician in to do it. As mentioned by others here I know that they all work fine now as just about every other time the oven door is opened we jump out of skins as they go off before a bit of frantic flapping with a cushion underneath the alarm nearest the kitchen shuts them off. As far as I am aware smoke alarms are not mandatory for private houses so I don't see that would be a factor so don't really see what insurance issues there would be. ( I do of course stand to be corrected ) If mains alarms wired in tandem all work when one is set off then I would presume that they must be wired in correctly but would advise anyone who is unsure to have theirs installed / checked by an electrician for peace of mind which after all is what the point of them is. Rented houses need an annual Gas and Electricity check certificate don't they? Which would cover any installations in those circumstances I'd have thought [Post edited 1 Jul 2019 10:35]

I suppose that would depend on the cause of the fire.

Alternatively you can buy the picture hangers (as advertised on TV) in The Range, etc. In fairness they are brilliant and if you need to replace the device it just peels away from the part stuck on the ceiling

I suppose that would apply if the cause was because of the dodgy circuit, they couldn't not pay out on an unrelated matter, say if reasonable precautions had been taken
