The Battle of the Somme Began 103 Years Ago Today ... 09:19 - Jul 1 with 950 viewstheloneranger

1st July 1916.

By the end of the first day of the 1st July 1916, British forces had suffered 57,470 casualties, ( Approx the capacity of the Etihad Stadium ), of whom 19,240 were killed ( Approx the capacity of the Liberty Stadium ).

It would be the bloodiest day in the history of the British army. Utter Carnage.

Mind blowing figures, especially when you think they all had mother's, fathers, brothers, sisters, wives, sweethearts, sons and daughters, really shocking.

We owe them a massive debt.

The least we can do is remember them.

10th JULY

Up until the outbreak of the Second World War, the 10th July was commemorated annually in Swansea as "Mametz Memorial Day".

On the 10th July 1916, a total of 700 members of the Swansea Pals Battalion were involved in an attack on Mametz Wood on the Somme ... During this battle almost 100 of the Pals were killed and over 300 wounded.

By the end of the war more than 600 of the Swansea Pals had lost their lives ... In Swansea and the surrounding area, everyone had either lost someone or knew someone who had been injured or killed in action!!

Indeed

My grandfather was in the Battle of the Somme he and his friend both lied about their age and signed up at 15 years old

And they were captured at some point during the confusion of the battle in woodland by Germans on horseback. When they realised they were kids luckily they let them go back to their lines, he survived that war but with mental and physical injury

We shall always remember the sacrifice those young men gave.
