Laminate Flooring 14:36 - Jul 3 with 2521 viewsJack11

Going to be laying a hallway and a living room for my parents this weekend. Never done it before, but I’m fairly decent with DIY. Are there any tips or hacks? Schoolboy errors to avoid? Is it best to start in the hall or the living room? Any tips gratefully received from anyone who’s done it!

Start in the furthest corner and work your way back, finishing at the entrance to the room.

May be obvious but hey-ho 😁

Wrong.

Find your longest length of flooring and work off that. Minimise the amount of cutting you'll need to do. If you end up finishing in the dorrway (which has the most traffic) you could end up with many smaller parts cut and it will look utterly shite.

Thanks - sounds much like floor tiling; measure and plan out first so you don’t end up with tiny little cuts around the edges.

Top tip from me. Work from the side that has nothing covering the wall. I made the bright decision to go around a pillar and under the plinth of the kitchen units, big mistake!

If you have a Costco membership have a look at the laminate they do. I had it at 12.50 a m2 and it is 14mm thick with a foam underlay attached. Its great stuff

Edit- it's the Golden Select German Laminate floor.

On the subject of flooring, recently my daughter had her kitchen and hall covered with a modern vinyl material. I was a bit sceptical about it but it is very nice.

Don't go thinking a 14mm board is a better quality than a 8mm board. Its about the grading. Ie grade 1 would be light traffic, grade 5 is for heavy traffic.

So if you see a 8mm with a grade 4, I'd chose that over a 14mm with a grade 2.

Just check the grade its 1 to 5.

Don't forget to leave a small gap to the skirtiing boards to allow for expansion.
Some useful tips on Youtube.

We shouldn't all be tarred with the same brush you know!

It's a bugger around the doorways, get a decent saw, measure twice cut once, and stop when you're tired, that's when you make all the mistakes!!!

As indicated by others buy high quality laminate. We have Quickstep in our living and dining room which cost a fortune but looks pretty good after 14 years with two kids and a dog. My mother-in-law has replaced hers 3 times buying cheap stuff in the same period. We have Karndean in our hallway and that looks immaculate after the same period.

We have commercial-grade laminate upstairs (meant for shops) which is also excellent, but not as aesthetically pleasing as the Quickstep.

We had someone fit it as I am not great at DIY

We did the same. I was similarly skeptical but it's surprisingly good.

Have you suggested a carpet instead?

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

I was not suggesting otherwise, I was just stating a common mistake people will do is go for a thicker floor thinking its a better floor, instead of looking at the grade.

No offence intended 👍

We looked at wood and engineered wood, but ended up going for the Quickstep Uniclic in a few of our rooms downstairs and it’s been excellent. It comes with a 25year guarantee and has stood up well in the 13 years it’s been down. It doesn’t need glue and just clicks together.
We also have a cheaper variety of laminate upstairs in some of the bedrooms, it came from Floors to go. It’s nice, but not as nice as the Quickstep.
