Knife crime was quite common in the 60s. And the rate we are at now is unique in taking us back to the level of the 1940s. Recently the Telegraph had a headline which said ‘knife crime now at its worst since the second world war’ as an indication of how bad it is.
Knife crime associated with gangs was even more common in Victorian times. The interesting thing is what they did about it then - they introduced what they called ‘working lads’ clubs’ - boxing, gymnastics, football etc was promoted in these clubs to take the gangs off the streets. Knife crime dropped sharply.
