One of the main characters (the female scientist) was a complete fiction invented for the purposes of the drama. They also took some other liberties with the facts as acknowledged by the writers. That’s fine of course because it was a drama, not a documentary or a docudrama. |
She was a composite character, a distillation. The two main protagonists were real enough.

To be fair, it might have ruined the story a bit if they had a song and dance routine midway through.
For me, the grimness wasn't the disaster itself, nor the deaths - we know that happened, watched the news when it happened. The grimness for me was the unrelenting dogma and ideology that both caused the tragedy and then tried to cover it up. | | | |
