The new chairman has got to keep this going.
It was an idea and vision set up by the old board
And is now paying dividends.
Bringing a lot of money to the club and some really good young
Players coming through.
We invested a lot of money on these fantastic facilities which is attracting
Good young players.
Long may it continue

Practically speaking, it really will depend a lot on other things, not least league status. A few million a year is very difficult without PL money or parachute payments, and even then it isn't easy.

I do agree though, it's one hell of an asset. Pays for itself in many ways, not least bringing through technically sound footballers who can fit in seamlessly.

I agree but I did u turn on this one.
I thought that a big name manager to attract players was all that was needed and the academy could be scrapped.
I still think this would work but, as I now see the Academy reaping it's rewards, I am a convert.

If it hadn't have been for our investment in the academy I genuinely think we may have dropped straight through the Championship last year. We would certainly not be where we are now, both in terms of league position and financial position.

A few million a year is a lot of financial commitment, but not when you consider the rewards you reap longer term, this is when you have to look at things as a business and not a sport. Just look at the profit margin made with the sale of James and McBurnie. Ultimately if they can continue to be successful in bringing players through to the first team then it's a worthwhile investment. Like raw materials in a factory, you invest in them before manufacturing your end product and shipping them out the door on a conveyor belt.

At some point Rodon, Roberts, Fulton, Grimes, Byers and Garrick will all leave for a decent profit. A proportion of that money needs to be reinvested back into the academy to ensure that conveyor belt keeps moving and we continue to see the benefits out on the field and on the balance sheets.

We will never compete with the big city clubs with arab,Russian,Chinese
Owners.
The old board realised this and invested in the academy facilities.
But this was a long term plan
Meantime we were trying to stay in the prem, and the board bowed to fan power and paid over the odds for a few players to keep us up.
And we nearly stayed up but fora few bad decisions by the manager.

I know our fans were not happy
when we bought players cheap from Scotland and the likes of James ,fulton, mcbernie, vdh etc.
But this is the only way we can compete.
Unless we can sell to a rich owner like Bournemouth did.

But I feel proud when we develop our own players
Long may continue.

Over to you Mr birch

For 2 - 3 season the under 23 regulars were aged 22-24. Yesterday (senior players aside) it was 20.
Even with Carroll, McKay and John in the starting line up they lost.
That chasm has to be filled because if the under 23s don't start picking up results soon there will be no production line and little chance of attracting quality players to the academy and therefore no point in keeping category 1 status.

Got to disagree with that, surely the results are a direct result of the average age you mentioned in your post. Those boys are gaining valuable experience, and will only get better over the next 12-24 months which is the prime time you want to start introducing them into the first team? What's more important for the U23's, Results or Development?

With what money? We were paying six figures a head for many of our bought-in young players, most of whom haven't gone on to big things.

Every club has young players getting "valuable experience" by playing, who will "only get better". To get more than one in a blue moon breaking through you need to add quality and competition, and a winning mentality doesn't hurt one bit. There was a lot of investment and turnover over 4/5 years that created the group that propped up our first team last season.

Few talents are going to want to join or stay with whipping boys. Results and development aren't mutually exclusive.

I understand your argument, and would agree if the current crop of players in the U23's dont become more competitive in the next 12-24 months. That would be a worry. But as they are so young it's a learning curve. As you see often see in Rugby junior sides, when the under 16's move up to Youth, they endure a tough season, by the time they end the 3 years they're more mature physically and mentally, more competitive and ready to continue their learning by stepping up to senior squad

We had one first year pro, one second year scholar and one first year scholar playing on Saturday. The others have at least one full season at u23s level under their belts. Half the Villa side we played a few weeks ago were recent u18s graduates, the lower-end Cat One setups don't seem to keep big groups around past their teens as we've been doing.

Last season was the tough one with a lot of new players stepping up at once. It's a pretty established group now, in a lower division. We can take the results and performances more or less at face value for where our development squad is at.

Usually. Games with a lot of senior stepping down for minutes are always a bit of a sideshow.

Verlinden's a good player. Probably should be in Stoke's first team as a regular by now. Can't be any worse.

Of course. Which makes it hard to find and develop bargains like DJ (£72k plus clauses) and Oli (£150k plus clauses) without spending multiple millions on young players in the first place. If you don't have that spare change rolling around the club's pockets then replicating our recent success becomes incredibly difficult. The transfer and agents fees, and wage bill for the academy sides were beyond what we can now afford.

What we spent on Adam King is now going to players expected to make immediate first team contributions.

No idea. At a non-league club, not from within the academies structure. Might not have been any fee at all, not like he would have had a serious contract at that level.

but we have a much better recruitment team and chairman now, so could probably find a few gems for around the prices you quoted there, without spending millions on flops at the same time.

Has our recruitment team signed anyone yet? He's only been on the job a month or so.

If it was that simple lots of clubs would be doing it. No one's got a crystal ball. Every club that can afford it is chasing quantity as well as quality, knowing most won't make the standard anticipated/desired.

Crazy thing is that we only achieved Cat 1 status relatively recently. We probably haven't even begun to see the results of that yet. Most of the players coming through now were here before then or were partly developed elsewhere.

The investment in coaching and facilities is about the only positive legacy Jenkins and co have left behind.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.
