I always prick the sloe berries with a thorn from the same Blackthorn tree (it's an Old Wives Tale but it seems to work). Cue the prick jokes. |  |

Another method is to put bag them up and put in the freezer for an hour or two.
This "pops" the berries so you don't have to prick them. | | | |

Yes, I’ve heard that, sometimes the frosts can be quite late, well into October, by that time the Sloes are past their best. I think that is why people pick them a bit earlier and put them in the freezer for a short period of time. | | | |
