I don't think anyone reasonable thinks people should be "cancelled" because of mistakes they made when they were young, but given that Trudeau himself has made statements to some effect supporting that sort of thing, it is difficult to have any sympathy. |  | | |

On the subject of Trudeau, it’s wrong. Full stop.
It was a long time ago, but it was recent enough that everyone knew that ‘blacking up’ was unacceptable. Simple as that.
It may be he’s matured, it may be that he’s a hypocrite. He’s apologised, and has also not shown anything in his policies since he’s been in public life that demonstrates he is bigoted. But he needs to have a frank conversation with those affected from Canada’s minority communities about whether the matter should lead to his resignation or whether they believe he’s reformed. It’s not ‘innocent’ as it is deeply hurtful for those affected, but they are the most appropriate people to decide. | | | |

The Province I live in, most people detest him.
He made a big deal of appointing 50% women to his cabinet, one of them was the first indigenous Canadian to a top position as the Federal attorney general. Who he promptly sacked when she wouldn't drop a corruption case against SNC-Lavalin. The corruption being linked heavily with the Liberal Government itself.
The Federal Government being what the EU will be to the UK without Brexit, the UK will have the equivalent of the Provincial Government. |  |

Intent is the key question here as far as I'm concerned. Was there a racist intent in Trudeau's actions, or was it youthful ignorance and naivety? I don't know enough about him to say for sure, but his track record on promoting the rights of indigenous Canadians suggests the latter. That doesn't excuse it, but it's hardly a resigning matter. If it was Trump doing that it would just be par for the course, and would be just one more indiscretion amongst many similar, or worse, actions. |  | | |
