I beg to differ. It was NOT a vote on PR, it was a referendum on the AV system v FPTP. The AV system was another way of finding a winning candidate in the existing constituencies. A kind of FPTP lite, if you will.
The PR system, as it works in Spain for example, is fundamentally different. There are 350 seats up for grabs in parliament. Each political party lists 350 candidates ranked in order from 1 to 350. Every voter in the national general election votes for one party. Then each party ends up with MPs in parliament in proportion to their share of the national vote. So as a simple example, if a party won 50% of the votes, they would end up with 175 MPs - the first 175 candidates on their list of 350.
These MPs don't represent a geographic constituency, those kinds of constituency don't exist. What DOES exist, which makes up for the lack of constituencies, is a very strong second level of government on a regional level. There are also political parties which represent specific 'ethnic' areas akin to Plaid and the SNP.
OK, the PR system is not perfect. In fact Spain is just about to go to the polls for the second time this year because the parties on the left which held the majority of the seats couldn't come to an agreement about a coalition government. But, by and large, the system by its nature forces compromise, negotiation and consensual politics. It stops lurches from one extreme to another and tends to keep extremists out of power or at least with little influence.

2011 is an absolute age ago. You might as well be saying 1960 after all that has happened.
FPTP is broken. It needs changing. Whether PR is the way to go is open to question but let's not pretend a referendum on one specific change which wasn't attractive to anyone really somehow dismisses any review of the voting system in the future. |  |
