Heard someone on Radio 4 who was involved in the original design, he said originally that the emergency refuge areas were specified to be every 500 yards but this has been stretched up to 1.5 miles.
He said putting them in every 500 yards would cost relatively little and avoid nearly all the deaths (I can't remember the exact figures).
You can see the logic that travelling at 70 mph if you had a problem you could probably pull over in 500 yards but very much less likely to make 1.5 miles. [Post edited 30 Jan 2020 23:21]

1.5 miles is way too far, there should be some compromise maybe 1000 metres or something?

Less likely to brake down in first place. They are heavier than diesel and petrol cars so they would have more kinetic energy and would be able to coast just as far.
Perhaps top gear or that other programme on Amazon could do a test. | |
