They need a safety review before deciding.FFS
If they haven't already carried out a Road Safety Audit (RSA), someone needs sacking.
The whole idea is bonkers.

Heard someone on Radio 4 who was involved in the original design, he said originally that the emergency refuge areas were specified to be every 500 yards but this has been stretched up to 1.5 miles.
He said putting them in every 500 yards would cost relatively little and avoid nearly all the deaths (I can't remember the exact figures).
You can see the logic that travelling at 70 mph if you had a problem you could probably pull over in 500 yards but very much less likely to make 1.5 miles.

If they do go, and I don't say they shouldn't, the congestion situation is going to be unbelievable at certain times of the day.

Typical UK government, try to pinch a few pennies off the cost and end up wasting millions if not billions more.

1.5 miles is way too far, there should be some compromise maybe 1000 metres or something?

Would electric cars be able to coast, or would they stop quickly if they go wrong?

"It comes amid growing concerns the roads are dangerous and do not offer safe refuge for broken down vehicles."

If only they could have foreseen that using the hard shoulder would mean there's no safe refuge for broken down vehicles

Is there something in the water? We seem to be surrounded by feckwits and incompetents everywhere at the moment.

Four lanes of traffic travelling at 60-100 mph and suddenly discovering there’s a large heavy static metal object probably still containing people blocking one lane.
What could possibly go wrong?

It’s taken years of traffic jams to accomplish this utter fûckwittery too.

The cynic in me would say maybe the powers that be are buying time to identify potential ways of avoiding prosecution (both for themselves, previous civil service and ministerial colleagues) for a variety of offences including Corporate Manslaughter because a complaint has been made to the police.
Most people with any common sense could see some real dangers in introducing Smart Motorways.

Less likely to brake down in first place. They are heavier than diesel and petrol cars so they would have more kinetic energy and would be able to coast just as far.

Perhaps top gear or that other programme on Amazon could do a test.

Poll: Sholud Wales rollout vaccination at full speed.
