I know music is subjective but do you think that some people say they like certain types of music because they think by saying it it makes them sound cool? I’ll tell you why I ask,I’ve seen loads of people saying on Twitter over the last couple of days how brilliant Bob Dylan’s first new song in eight years is,I’m not a fan and wasn’t interested but after seeing someone say about it again just now I thought I’d have a listen. I can’t lie,I thought it was the biggest load of fuçking wánk I’ve heard in years,probably since he last released something.

They brought out an album a few years ago called The Doctor and it was piss poor. Never bought into this liking music because it's cool. Always listen to music that I enjoy, and happy for others to do the same. Lots of famous artists out there that aren't my cup of tea. Same with artists I do like, don't like everything they have produced.

Agree Darren. I probably listen to more middle of the road music than you, but even fans of certain bands or singers have to be honest and call a single or album a dud when it is. I remember buying Rainbow's Down to Earth album, as I loved Since You Been Gone. I listened to it about three times, after that just listened to the few tracks I liked (3 from memory)

Loud and proud Darren Also Deep Purple, Family, Uriah Heep, Rainbow, to name a few. Doesn't stop me liking lots of other genres of music. Best concerts I've seen were REM, Stereophonics, Eagles, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Squeeze, Elvis Costello .... and Adele of course

What sets Dylan apart from most is his ear for a good melody and lyricism. As a performer he's bang average. His harmonica playing is ropy to say the least. I doubt he's able to play a single note without bleed either side. Luckily those harmonicas are diatonic! His voice is unappealing and weak in my opinion. He can hold a tune but to those saying he's lost his voice - he never really had one. Can't stand him as a performer. Respect him as a writer.
As for my taste, it ranges from death metal to electronic and some rap artists, and mostly everything in between.
I would never denigrate someone else for liking certain music. A lot can be said for the polished songwriters behind Adele etc. I've been keeping sane by learning old school groove and thrash metal riffs on guitar. Pantera can move
I think what gets me is the herd mentality with some music, like having to look a certain way if you like certain music. When I attend heavy metal gigs, such as Devin Townsend, Tesseract, Trivium, As I Lay Dying etc, seemingly everyone was wearing black, long hair, heavy metal band t shirt. There I was in my flowery shirt and brown shoes, and the missus in a yellow dress. It doesn't matter!
