Mosley, Foot and the likes of me... 09:32 - Apr 7 with 3070 viewsLohengrin

So despite all the incessant media babble about Mosley’s ‘extremism,’ and Foot’s ‘suicide note’ it turns out they were right all along, as were the constant Jeremiads delivered on-line by the likes of me. Is there anybody reading this today, even those who were formerly the most rabid believers in globalism, who don’t now recognise the central importance of maintaining and developing domestic productive capacity?

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.

You don't need to have extreme views to believe a country needs to be as close to self sufficient in the basics. Public services food and jobs.

If I think you're saying, in plain English, that we should have a bigger manufacturing base in this country and look after it then yes I agree. I've been saying it for at least 30 years, it's not exactly rocket science, but sadly governments, mostly Tory, have been happy to see manufacturing decline. It is a lot easier to make people redundant in this country than others and so multi-national companies usually close down sites here and move them to Europe, India and beyond. That's your tories for you in a nutshell, it began with Thatcher.

Every country should be as self sufficient as possible, we can import the nice stuff all we like but for basic foodstuffs, clothes, the daily essentials we need to be producing as much as possible in our own country.

The utilities should be state owned and not for profit.

No that doesn't mean closed borders, stop immigrantion etc it just means being able to provide for ourselves.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Well .....

I agree that Thatcher killed lots of the organisations that helped Britain function - british coal, british Steel, british telecomms, british gas, british airways, british rail, water, electricity, nuclear ... all thrown on the scrap .... along with peoples lives and futures ... none has been good.

Much of this privatised and therefore chases the lowest costs.
This then means coal from Poland, steel from China etc etc
Reduce costs and make more money. Repeat.
Its killed the planet as well as shittting on all the good people involved.

I think there needs to be a balance though, IT is huge value to all aspects of our daily lives now and to ignore the global direction makes zero sense.

To people like Kilk that's an inconvenient truth.

It's the same as with the NHS though, both Labour and Tory are guilty to varying degrees.

Thatcher is guilty as charged.

Nobody else sold off the lot.
‘No such thing as society’ ... remember that.

Totally indifferent to the futures of hard working people.

All people wanted was the basics like water, electricity, gas, and maybe reliable trains.
Lets be honest having suppliers compete to supply you on the very same infrastructure is a bit strange... a game ?

NHS was next up, and social care was ripped up.

Civil Service was privatised, i am surprised the army and police survived.

An legacy of evil. Feck the Tories.

Thing is a lot of the people who watch morning TV would have been once classed as working class, but they don't give a Fck as long as free stuff turns up weekly and they don't have to sweat to get it.

How about looking at the full text of Thatchers speech, not just a snall bit taken and used by her political enemies,

https://www.thedailybeast.com/context-for-margaret-thatchers-there-is-no-such-th

Lets remember too, it was Blair who continued to privatise and who accelerated the PFI schemes that cause the NHS so much pain today.

Thatcher isn't the only one to blame but maybe we should be looking forwards and trying to fix it rather than constantly harping on about the past?

Take pollution, if Covid-19 has helped sho anything beyond doubt it's that we use our cars too often, NO2 is down 60% on the same time last year (in some areas) and can anyone say that's bad? Covid obviously is bad btw, before anyone chimes in!

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

That's a bit of a binary view isn't it? You can have a much larger manufacturing sector than ours whilst still embracing globalism. Germany manage it. Which probably proves that yes, there are people in the UK who still don't recognise the importance of it. I doubt they'll be reading this though.

There'll be books a plenty written about this I'm sure, none of which I've read. But I wonder what the impact of China taking off in the mid 90s has been. It's briefly mentioned in the site where you got that graph from:

https://fullfact.org/economy/did-labour-decimate-manufacturing/

Which brings us back round full circle to Loh's OP. Is reliance on China part of the problem, and if so why did we go down that route and not look to support our manufacturing more like Germany?

I'm tempted to say it's consumer driven. Britain's a 'pile it high, sell it cheap' kind of place. We'd rather snap up cheap tatt than save for something a bit better. But that may only be a small part of the answer, or completely wrong. Feck knows.
