Castell Howell are a big outfit. They employ something like 700 people across West Wales and source a lot of their goods from Welsh farmers and suppliers, whatever happens to the CH staff the once on will be felt by suppliers across the region and yet more jobs are likely to be lost. This is going to hit South West Wales hard.
Brian Jones is the man behind the company and he is a really decent, hardworking, genuine guy who cares. He supports lots of charities, good causes, sports clubs etc and what’s happening must be really hurting him.
Over the last few months the cash and carry has been opened to the general public and I have have done some of my shopping there (as have others) and will do a bit more this weekend. I am not going away this year and when restrictions are lifted I will be supporting local businesses who his company supplies. Let’s hope the bounce back from the recession will be quick. |  | | |

I'm not sure where you get that information from, Mrs. TJ is a teacher and has worked everyday since lockdown, and the last 2 weeks working 14hr days to ensure the planning and safety measures are all in place ready for next Monday. The adjusting of term times was widely supported in her school but rejected by the unions. I'm not suggesting its the same everywhere but that is my personal experience from the horses mouth.
Oh and as a thank you there is a meeting within the next 2 weeks to discuss job and hr cuts. [Post edited 24 Jun 2020 4:13]

Good luck to you and Mrs TJ, I’m sure every word you said there is true but not all teachers have covered themselves in glory. After hearing on here about the lengths that some schools have gone to and the experiences of some of my friends I definitely feel like my boys have been let down by their school. Very little contact, worked not being marked, meanwhile teachers finding time to post videos of all the fun things they’ve been doing during lockdown. My other half is the same, hasn't stopped working since the lockdown every day on the computer setting work and marking etc etc. Plus taking it in turns to go in to teach the children of essential workers.
Given the massive extra hours that she normally works unpaid when schools are actually open, I've lost count of the amount of times she normally works up until one in the morning setting course work or trying to catch up on marking. working all over weekends doing the same. Marking books weeks after finishing on supply contracts when unpaid etc.
One thing that I would like to think should be of concern to all is that every teacher that I have spoken to for years now has expressed the view that they would jack the job in an instant if something suitable came along.
I would have thought that might be quite alarming to those who are concerned about the education system in general
One of the real problems during the lockdown is many (estimated as up to half) of the children not lifting a finger and basically having an extended holiday and one would have to ask what are the parents doing in these cases in regards supervising their children and checking that they are actually doing the work set for them.
There are also many children now panicking that if teachers are to assess and award marks that they have blown their chances of decent grades etc because they, rather than the teachers treated lockdown as an extended holiday.
I used to be in the old 'teachers always on holiday' brigade but I've long been urging my wife to get out and get a job elsewhere after seeing her run herself into the ground with the amount of work much of it unpaid as already mentioned.
As regards the hard left run unions refusing to sanction a restart you need to speak to the resident lefties on here as to why their socialist activist heroes are reluctant to reactivate childrens education. | | | |

Pay and promotion freeze for the foreseeable future and likely 20% of staff to be made redundant. Research funding is being cut . It is bleak. We have the most irresponsible government in the developed world over this outbreak. We are reaching a point where we can ease lockdown. From what I can tell it based on inadequate protection in place in some schools- it is fine in the school where my wife works due to hard work and planning. Other places not so. I certainly believe getting it right to allow all kids back is better than the piecemeal approach in England. | | | |

My wife used to work in a school, it was a case of increasing pupil numbers, increasing class sizes, increasing hours versus a decreasing budget, less teaching staff, less resources in terms of books etc. I was a school governor for a number of years and my experience was the same.
There are of course good teachers who are committed to supporting their kids and lots of teachers went the extra mile, after school activities in the evenings, Saturday mornings etc and others would do the minimum they could get away Witt, but their colleagues new the score and these were in the minority.
In terms of opening schools, i am all for it but it needs to take place but in a controlled and careful way. Kids may not be overly affected by the virus, but there’s nothing to say they can’t spread it around and pass it to their teacher, who spreads it to the other teachers who spread it to their families etc nor is there anything to say they can’t pass it to parents etc. We already have a significant outbreak in Anglesey, we don’t need another one. Do I blame the unions for looking after their members interests? No, I don’t because it’s what they are paid to do, there needs to be grown up and mature conversations between all the parties so that a sensible solution can be achieved.
