Which would be an infringement of the 5th and 9th amendments of the US constitution- cornerstones of the Bill of Rights. The Police should also have an obligation to allow their free
Speech under the first amendment.
Would also apply to the ‘white power’ lot. Strange how they are rarely unconstitutionally shut down.

Not that I personally support either side.

It’s easy to see how far the Beeb has fallen down the rabbit hole when they are describing Mount Rushmore as “controversial” and a whole article describing Independence Day as “a myth”.

I used to love the Beeb but it’s sadly beyond redemption.

You don’t believe Mount Rushmore to be controversial?

Why is that?

Not like it’s built on Lakota Sioux sacred ground.
That’s before whether any slave owners are featured is entered into.

Are you aware of the R.E.M. song ‘Cuyahoga’? Whilst it’s a lot about the environment it has the lines- let’s put our heads together, start a new country off. Our father’s fathers fathers tried, erased the parts they didn’t like’.

Sums up a lot of the history of US expansion

Even the US Supreme Court ruled in favour of the Sioux Nation I believe.

There can be very few places that are as controversial as Mount Rushmore.

It’s not people having different opinions about stuff which bothers me, it’s the utter lack of any degree of knowledge behind so many of those different opinions. If someone hears Mount Rushmore described as ‘controversial’ surely the response is to investigate why that’s the case (which takes all of 5 minutes these days as it’s explained on the Wikipedia site) rather than to denounce the BBC as some sort of Uber PC mouthpiece?

It’s about as stupid as tearing down Caerphilly Castle because it was built on land that once belonged to the welsh and is a symbol of oppression and power etc.

All of the US is built on Native American land ffs. You lot are beyond mental.

It’s not that simple. The Black Hills were specifically included in treaties between the Sioux and the US Government as sacred to the tribes . A gold prospector find in the hills led to the US breaking the treaty and the military campaign of 1876 under Terry. Their aim was to clear the territory of the Sioux- mainly the Lakota and Hunkapapa. Mostly this was achieved through village clearances. The 7th cavalry being particularly engaged in this tactic. Unfortunately their impetuous commander Colonel George Armstrong Custer underestimating the size of the combined Sioux and Cheyenne forces and an overstretched supply chain led to a bit of a setback at
little Big Horn. Ultimately the military industrial complex of the US overcame the tribes.

It would be like putting a big statue of Fred Keenor were the Vetch centre circle stood.

” It would be like putting a big statue of Fred Keenor where the Vetch centre circle stood.“

Putting the football partisanship to one side Keenor’s life story is truly inspirational, a genuine triumph over adversity. He would be a great subject for a biopic.

It’s not remotely comparable.

It’s more akin to someone building a Mosque on the site of Stonehenge or St Paul’s cathedral,

People have just lost all leave of their senses. History was brutal. People are brutal. We can’t change that now. It’s done. We can look at it and say “that was horrible, let’s learn from it and be nicer to each other in future” or we can live in perpetual penance where we flagellate each other for the wrongdoings of people who lived centuries ago.

But remember construction began less than 50 years after the conflict. In clear living memory. There is now at least a monument to the Lakota chief Crazy Horse being built. I wonder how many attendees are aware of the background

Yes and all that is bloody awful but here we are 150 odd years later. How many more centuries will it take before we stop dredging up the horrors of history and start coming together?

I imagine Mount Rushmore brings in an incredible amount of revenue to the local area. Be absolutely ludicrous to demolish it. Surely there’s a more sensible approach.

Mount Rushmore was completed in the 1940s not ‘centuries ago’.
