Yamaha FSE 1e. £220 new whilst apprentice Graduated to BSA Goldstar (forget how much) before car ownership Still got a 70s Jawa 897 speedway bike as well as Rover 75 daily runner Just prompted me to look up BSA GoldStar on the web I wonder if I could persuade the chap I sold it to to sell it back to me for the £150 he gave for it as they appear to be going for anything between £14,000 and £20,000. Better investment than gold. [Post edited 5 Aug 2020 15:37]

My older brother had the Riley 1.5 which had twin SU carbs and was a bit quicker than the Wolsely. I got 90mph indicated out of the Wolsely. They had problems with their suspension bushes on their torsion bars, but were generally quite reliable. I bought a 1600cc Sunbeam Rapier to replace it.

My fourth car was a white 65 Cortina GT with a mat black bonnet and a lightened flywheel. You had to be really careful revving it or it flew in to the red band. It's main radiator hose burst on the M4 and after the AA replaced it and refilled the rad it started with a loud donging noise from the engine. I thought it had blown a main bearing. After stripping the lower end of the engine outside the house in the street, the bearings were OK. We rebuilt it and the donging was still there, it turned out that the inner of one of the double valve springs had snapped and the top half was slipping off the bottom half and hitting the cylinder head. Those were the days when you could work on the car yourself without all the sensors and computers etc. [Post edited 5 Aug 2020 16:02]

Your First Car/Motor cycle. on 18:42 - Aug 5 with 732 views | controversial_jack | My first was a box type Vauxhall Viva bought for £85. Then a Triumph herald 1200, for £230, both lasted me a while. Next was a Hillman super minx, which was built like a tank thankfully as I turned it over on it's side going into a aqua skid in Fabian way and got out of it without a scratch. I can't remember the years of the cars, but I remember how much they cost.I do remember it was more fun driving during the mid 70s than it is now

Your XR3i must also have been expensive to insure. I would have thought the MGA registration was worth a bit to the MGA club members.

It was £700 odd quid. It was stolen within the year and found burnt out over in Llandarcy village
