“Firebreak lockdown” a masterclass in incompetence. 23:33 - Oct 22 with 19910 viewsHighjack

Dr Drakeford and his cronies have really set the bar high on the incompetence stakes on this one.

They have announced tonight that retailers will only be allowed to sell “essential goods” during the 17 day lockdown but they are unable to say what counts as essential or non essential. At the time of writing this there is just over 18 hours to go until these rules come into force. The predictable result is that the entire population of Wales will rush out in the short time that is left and ravage the shelves of anything and everything that could potentially count as non essential. Meanwhile retailers are completely in the dark with just a few hours to go they are blissfully unaware of what they will or won’t be allowed to sell or whether they’ll be allowed to stay open at all.

Absolute idiocy from dippy Drakeford and this cabal of insidiously irrational imbeciles.

Also the support packages for persons/businesses don't come in to affect until November 1st, as far as I am aware welsh businesses/workers can't claim for the first week of the "Firebreak lockdown".

Avoid the shops tomorrow. It’s going to be absolute carnage and the virus will have a field day.

Makes you think what is non-essential? It's a joke..

I could walk out tomorrow, wreck my footwear or rain coat, and have to wait till November 9th, it's terrible, I always knew they were no good, when they brought the min price per unit in, just before the first lockdown..

Supermarkets can't sell clothes or electrical goods, in order to help smaller businesses that specialise in these but are not allowed open.

I think Dr Drakeford has got shares in Amazon!

Why on earth are garden centres closed. The benefits of gardening during last lockdown were enormous for mental well being. Does anyone amongst Drakeford's muppets not listen to the science!

I fully recognise that this virus needs to be controlled but this is absolutely ridiculous.

If we don't see a clear and significant benefit from this fortnight Drakeford should resign.

Thousands of businesses have worked hard and invested money in making their premises Covid secure and this is their reward.

It's a total clusterf*ck.

Get the truffle oil off the shelves?

The actual science..

Documents published this month revealed a circuit-breaker lockdown was at the top of a shortlist of interventions recommended to the Government by the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) in September.

But Sage experts acknowledged the evidence base around the impact of intervention packages was “weak”, noting that data is “often observational” and supplemented by modelling estimates.

They explained that difficulties arise out of predicting how far people will adhere to new measures, the delay in interventions revealing any impact on cases numbers and the difficulty in judging what future outcomes may have happened without a circuit-breaker.

Professor Graham Loomes, a behavioural scientist at Warwick Business School, said the Sage document had not factored in elements such as infection control in hospitals, ongoing “face, space and hygiene” measures, international travel controls and NHS Test and Trace.

“There was one more massive consideration which was ‘out of scope’ — namely any serious attempt to quantify the damage to jobs, incomes, businesses, mental health, other health, social life and civil liberties,” he argued.

Its common knowledge that the results whether the forthcoming Lockdown will not be registered until after the two weeks have been completed ,so my expectation is that this will go on longer than the proposed end date .I hope I'm wrong I really do

At the beginning of July the Australian state of Victoria implemented a six week temporary lockdown. It's only recently been eased. Doesn't take a huge leap to see the same thing happening here.

We've gone from managing the outbreak to trying to suppress it entirely, which is nonsensical.

Dr W for the Senedd I say!

I'm an advocate of managing it through a long term plan. One that allows business to stay open as long as they obey the rules.

I guess we'll have to wait and see but I also have the feeling this "firebreak" will grow. Patrick Vallance said last night he expects such measures to carry on, on a rolling basis.

We need one set of rules for the whole UK too. Not the current bickering and grandstanding and mass confusion about what's happening where.

Anyway, now I must pop to Tesco for my lifetime supply of toilet roll

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Seven hours and forty five minutes to go and they still haven’t bothered to clarify what counts as non essential goods.

They just want to be seen to be doing more than Westminster. It’s pure politics, they are playing with people’s lives.

When Drakeford made the announcement regarding the "firebreak" he was questioned about it being extended. He stated categorically that although the benefits would not be seen in the 17 days the lock down definitely would not be extended and would end at 12.01am on 09.11.20.

This pandemic is costing a fortune. Its the young that will have to pay for it over many years, us oldies will be dead before then.

We only finished paying the second world war dept in 2006.

No, the blame lies with panicky politicians who decided to lock healthy young people in their homes for most of the summer then acted surprised when rates rose as those lockdowns are eased in early autumn.

The people getting infected en mass now could have been picking it up in more manageable dribs and drabs over the summer when respiratory viral transmission is harder. Instead of a steady trickle we've now got a flood.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.
