They weren't armed. It didn't need the SBS to do that.

Obviously you must have been in the briefing when the plans were being created on how not to escalate the situation , poor defenceless hi hackers , they must have frightened the crew with their random dancing . You do realise that piracy is still a crime or is does that fact not count . Any way good practice for our special forces and hopefully a deterrent for any other halfwit who thinks of repeating it.

How does anybody know what they had?? The crew were locked in the Citadel, and only the captain remained on the bridge, and they reported that the stowaways became violent when found!

This story will disappear soon enough until its discovered that the hijackers are now settled in a nice 4 star hotel or Penally Court, whichever has the next available vacancies .

Oil Tanker in the channel on 16:02 - Oct 26 with 567 views | Boundy | Obviously an over the top reaction "Sixteen members of the Special Boat Service (SBS) ended a 10-hour stand-off which started when stowaways on board the ship reportedly became violent. Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said there had been a "threat to life". Hampshire Constabulary said the seven men were being held on suspicion of "seizing or exercising control of a ship by use of threats or force under Sections 9(1) and (3) of the Aviation and Maritime and Security Act 1990". "All 22 crew members are safe and well and the vessel is now alongside in the port of Southampton," a spokesman said. Investigators are now speaking to the ship's crew to establish what happened. The stowaways, believed to be Nigerians, were handed over to Hampshire police on Sunday night. Mr Wallace said: "What was emerging was a clear threat to life on the ship and at that point the police made representation to the Ministry of Defence that they didn't have the capability to do what was needed in these challenging circumstances. "We were under the awareness that the suspects were also threatening to do something with the ship. "If they were threatening to take control of the ship then, of course, that is a hijack and the threat to the environment and, more importantly, to the lives of people on the ship is something the state can't tolerate."

That's a lot of assumptions fella, as someone who has actually lost someone to covid, I'm certainly not a member of the "wish the pandemic gets worse brigade" you complete halfwit. Don't you dare accuse me of being happy for people to die just to damage Boris. I don't consider anyone on here to be scum, you're the closest though !!!

So the SBS are trained to fight a handful of unarmed Nigerians ? I was hoping for a bit more tbh .... Like , you know, 20 Russian special forces or something ?

Oil Tanker in the channel on 09:08 - Oct 27 with 393 views | Catullus | I am a bit puzzled. 7 Nigerians and 22 crewmen. The Nigerians threatened violence...it's hardly Captain Phillips stuff this. Unless the Nigerians actually had AK-47's and were about to start shooting. It's not that I disagree with the SBS going in, they are trained for this, the police aren't. Maybe we need to know the full story? Seems to me though, the port these stowaways used to board this ship need better security and the ships do to. The owners are probably more interested in the profits though.

How do you know they were unarmed. The ship's captain put out a call for help he feared his crew were in danger. One again Britain show it is great. Unlike your IRA terrorist friends well know for blowing up unarmed children

Actually the police are trained in hostage situations but I'm assuming not when the situation is at sea. That was a large vessel in busy shipping lanes carrying a potential fire hazard and if not fire at the least a environmental hazard . The ship was observed to be making numerous turns hence the large exclusion zone around it.I would imagine the authorities weren't going to let the hijackers command the situation rather end it as quickly as possible. The MofDP have a number of bases in the UK but none as near as the Isle of Wight .It makes more sense even though it may upset those who are anti military to use the specialist s in their field to prevent a situation becoming worse. I can imagine now the cries of outrage if the ship had exploded due to a terrorist bomb exploding aboard or ramming other ships . PS you don't have to carry firearms to overpower someone although perhaps they managed to get hold of the ships armoury ( under international law ships are allowed to carry firearms for self protection ) I'm sure all will be revealed (as much as necessary to satisfy those who feel the need to be satisfied)
