| The English are a strange breed, can anyone fathom them out ? on 12:13 - Dec 5 by Joe_bradshaw | My wife was born in England of Welsh parents near RAF Finningley where her father was stationed at the time. She’s as fiercely Welsh as anyone I know. Every person has a different story and generalising is futile. We’re a multiracial society in Wales and hopefully we wouldn’t have it any other way. Immigrants are welcome from all corners of the world and that includes England. The whole mix makes up modern Welsh society and is the Welsh electorate. |
The amount of anti-English posts on this site are really starting to grate. Next year I will have spent half my life in Wales and half over the border. I have never, personally or professionally been discriminated against due to my nationality in England. My son was born in England. Many of my closest friends are English. Mostly English folks are genuinely interested when they chat to me (my accent is still pretty thick so nationally invariably comes up). This idea of English arrogance is rubbish. It only stands up if you’re only referring to public schools, Eton politicians and Tommy Robinson types on YouTube - a tiny fraction of the population. Most people are tidy.

I don't think there is any issue with English people except for - the Empire, the Queen, the class system, survival of the fittest outlook and voting Conservative and all those ensuing policies.

Indeed, apparently they believe in one thing but vote for something else, which is odd.

Excellent post we have a lot of narrow minded posters on PS. It amazes me as they are posting on a message board of a football club that plays in the English league.

In Wales, Labour got 41% of the vote on a 66% turnout. Most people in Wales didn't choose Labour. Most people in Wales, by that measure only voted against something else. 59% against Labour, 63% against tories, 90% against Plaid. In the Senedd elections the turnout was much lower, around 45% with about 65% of people not voting Labour. Is that what our democracy is, apart from when we have a binary choice, the results only reallyshow that most of us didn't vote for something so it's only the minority who get what they want. On a 45% turnout does that show that well over half the electorate don't care about the senedd? Don't care who runs Wales? It's dangerous place to be when the majority of the electorate think voting doesn't matter. It's how more extreme politicians tend to make ground, in my opinion anyway.

I agree with most of your post gwyn, I like you have many english friends having lived oop north for over 30 years but I have experienced a few instances of arrogance, not many and i put it down to those still thinking that england still owns a third of the world, I dont hate them I pity them.

I agree, the vast majority of people all over the world are as you say tidy. A lot of division in created by those who are politically motivated. I used to work with a guy from Belfast who described the troubles as a couple of hundred idiots spoiling things for everyone else.

When I was a frequent visitor to Bradford I never had any problems. In fact I've had more problems from some Welsh people for not being a Welsh speaker and not hating the Englsih. Us welsh eh, historically we've spent more time in fighting, and the OP says the English are strange.

Virtually every election we have (including UK wide) the winning side will have less than 50% of the vote of the total vote, are you suggesting that every election (or basically every election we have ever had) we have is somehow not valid ?

| The English are a strange breed, can anyone fathom them out ? on 14:12 - Dec 5 with 421 views | BarrySwan | I find the anti English nats an embarrassment to Wales and don't consider them to be true Welsh people as they don't in any way resemble the majority decent friendly people of this country who I know are a credit to Wales and its reputation UK and Worldwide. There are unpleasant pieces of work amongst the English population just as there are unfortunately amongst the Welsh population. But having lived and worked all over the UK I have found that the ordinary people of each area in general to be decent, nice, approachable and helpful people and a pleasure to live amongst and socialise with including good natured banter during sports events etc. Not the bitter twisted embarrassments that many of the nats of each country tend to veer toward in my experience. Having less than 50% of the vote is fine, it's when significantly fewer than 50% bother to vote I see an issue. It shows a disconnect with politics, a distrust too. It also gives opportunity for more extreme people to gain power. The vast majority of people are (or were) quite moderate, we usually don't ask for very much. It's the disconnect from politics that sees us end up with Corbyns and Johnsons, Trumps and Bidens. This level of polarisation is a bad thing, it'll cause more problems in the future. | |

Mayor votes, council votes, police commissioner votes, referendum votes are often less than 50% of the electorate. The Bojo-Corbyn/Trump-Biden votes were well over 50% turnout as they were General Election/Presidential election votes.

Do you think this describes the average English person? It doesn’t. It that’s part of your argument for devolution then quite frankly it’s pathetic. I love Wales and I love Swansea. I’ll be back at some point even if that may be post retirement as currently east of the border offers me a better life. Not being anti-English doesn’t make me a bad Welshman - hopefully it makes me a decent person

I hope not, but they do vote Conservative in large numbers which causes division, inequality, have and have nots etc imo and that fact alone might cause the UK to break up I don't have a devolution argument, devolution is here, it's reality. Do you have an issue with devolution ? I don't know anybody anti English, I've no issue with people from England myself and there are no anti English posters on here imo, there might be snowflakes on here taking offence on others behalf were it doesn't exist mind you.

I meant independence as opposed to devolution. I’ve no issue with devolution - I think it’s a good thing IF done well. I’m not convinced it’s the case currently.

Oh I see, there are unionist posters on here that go on.about having an independence vote on here all the time, I have no idea why, I have never ever heard one single person in my entire life away from this board say we should have an independence vote in Wales. If there is evidence of a demand for it then fine , perhaps unionists are afraid of losing such a vote in the distant future so they want one now so they can guarantee to win it and prevent a future vote when they might not win it.
