"His ban relates to rule E8(1)(b), which states: "Where a participant provides to any other person any information relating to football which the participant has obtained by virtue of his or her position within the game and which is not publicly available at that time, the participant shall be in breach of this rule where any of that information is used by that other person for, or in relation to, betting."
The offence happened at the time of his transfer from Spurs to Madrid. Reading between the lines, if he told someone he was going to Athletico and they put a bet on should he be banned. Fair enough if he was in on the bet otherwise if he just said to a friend/relative he was about to sign, is it fair. [Post edited 23 Dec 2020 14:54]

He is being paid over £2m per year you bet it is fair.
With priviliges come responsibilities. Had he profited from the bet it should be a life ban. I assume the penalty is for "carelessness" not "corrupt practices".
Corruption kills the sport and temptation is pressuring sports people all the time. The penalties must be severe to keep it at bay. |  |

Wouldn’t hand over his mobile phone to the FA so he was obviously hiding the text trail, mind you if the FA had any powers they would have got it anyway. He seems pretty happy to be banned until February, could have had more to lose by disclosure of his phone, it’s a very personal item. |  |
