Wales v Mexico : International Friendly Matchday Thread 04:37 - Mar 26 with 2877 viewsNotLoyal

It’s a spicy friendly on Welsh soil on Saturday evening with Wales taking on a Mexico side preparing for the CONACAFAFACA tournament, which is like COVID but with football in it. This will be a tough fixture for Wales who have not beaten Mexico in four meetings.

International Friendly Wales v Mexico : Saturday latest 27th Mar 2021 09:11
After a decent performance in Belgium on Wednesday night Wales return home to play a friendly, for whatever reason, against Mexico. With the Czech Republic World Cup qualifiers on the horizon we expect this game to see an experimental side picked. Swansea City products Ben Cabango and Brandon Cooper should see some game time, and we all hope that Conner Roberts is rested. 0

We kick off above with an extensive look at the pre match news and the Swansea academy products making a mark in the Welsh squad.

More to follow.

The International "break".
What a pitiful phrase, almost as meaningles as this game.
Our players have 2 more games to get themselves injured

Hopefully now Gunter's getting gifted his 100th cap he can finally be binned off for good. Should be nowhere near the squad on ability but the obsession with that silly milestone has carried him through the last 10-15 apps minimum.

Pathetic record. Hopefully players who deserve their totals overtake him asap.

Winning a cap or gifted ?, If its given because of the "magic " figure then IMO it devalues the integrity of the whole process .

Try telling that to Brandon Cooper who will be making his debut v Mexican 'greats' being watched by millions in Mexico and the USA on TV or online. Most of the slected team actually need something to do. Hennessey, Gunter, Cooper, Mepham, Levit, Tyler Roberts, Matndo, Tom Lawrence will all play and have barely kicked a ball recently. They have less game time than Paul Arriola.

Gunter is a typical of a new breed of Welsh international football of limited talent who made the most of his ability and provded the assist for Vokes 3 rd goal v Belgium . A great moment for Welsh fans and more iconic that anything the multi talented Giggs ever did in Welsh shirt.

Your comments will find favour with the club focussed radicals but over all is pretty poor. Gunter never let Wales down and always showed up. Many back in the day prefered to do a bit of gardening.

Indeed. Rise above how the scummers act towards players associated with us.

100 caps is a great achievement and arguably during the team's most successful ever period.

We're not "back in the day" any more and for the last few years there are better right backs (and centre halves when he's been shoe-horned in there) eligible for Wales. Shouldn't be handing out bonus caps for the boys who behaved themselves, it's pathetic.

If Bale or Hennessey get to 100 that's worth celebrating. Gunter has been made into sideshow wheeled out for the friendlies. It's a shame, tarnishes the ~80 legitimate caps he got.

Who've been the better right backs then? Not counting Roberts who has taken his place for competitive games.

Adam Matthews? Kieron Freeman? Jazz?

Neco's emergence should have been the final nail in the coffin after Gunter had spent two seasons as a bit-part player/outcast in a very poor Reading side. Freeman for sure was better at Championship level with Sheff Utd.

Matthews probably on the opposite side of the talent vs application scale from Gunter. Didn't make the most of his talent.

I think you're clutching at straws now. Yes Gunter had spells out of the Reading team but his Wales performances didn't dip. Freeman was a dependable player at Sheff Utd, but i doubt worthy at any point really of dislodging Gunter from that settled defence.

That's the 2018-present period where Connor had already dislodged him from that settled defence, and Gunter was going months without getting meaningful club minutes. Other senior players in similar situations were being left out of squads as we looked forward.

The difference was the record people had become obsessed with. Three years of sentimental callups needed to get Gunter to 100 after Connor made his debut and we no longer needed to look back to ancient history (in a footballing sense) from 2016.

Struggling with your point again here.

Are you now saying it's only really the 2018 to present period of Gunter picking up caps that you are annoyed at? Even though Roberts has clearly been the number 1 choice&Gunter deputising?

Who should have played instead of Gunter in the friendlies or when Roberts has been injured etc then? Can't make a case for Jazz, Freeman, Matthews since 2018, they're careers have all hit the skids. The pet project Coxe hasn't worked out either. More recently Neco Roberts, but he's been playing as well as Roberts in some games.

The Welsh team has been burdened by under achievement and disinterest for years. I watched them in front of 3,000 at the Vetch in the past. The FAW are now a much slicker organisation with the online stuff and like to create a "narrative" to get social engagement. This encourages family friendly approach and a move away from the grey inter club rivalies that have made the experience dour and hostile in the past.

"Only" a 3 year period, yeah. I know your reading comprehension is poor, you prove that time and time again on this site (at times I give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're on a pisstake), but my issue from the start of the thread is all the gift caps he's been getting to reach the magic number. He's 4th maybe 5th best right back eligible for Wales now but still gets callups.

100 is not worth celebrating. It's a PR stunt, a gift for one of the boys, not an accomplishment. The total before Roberts made his debut was earned, there was no one else better and capable of staying fit/interested in football.

Really, just what is this game about.
Mid season and squeezed between 2 qualification games.
When Roberts comes back he'll be even more shattered,as willl the other players.

Just who gives a monkeys.

Gunter 100 caps say much really.

Anyway,Casualty on tonight

Haha don't get all grumpy and personal now because your spurious point has been disproved.

Since 2018, which i assume now was the period you were moaning about, what's your point? That he shouldn't have played in any friendlies?
Who should have played them instead? Neco Williams is only 19 now, we've discussed the Cameron Coxe non starter. Freeman, Jazz were offering nothing after 2018.

Would you have wanted Roberts flogged more in these friendlies then?

Who are the 4 better than him at this current time out of interest?

Good PR is good PR it is an entertainment business. Welsh players do not have to be world class in a country of only 3m to get to 100 caps. There were many players to challenge him but he was the fittest and the best.

I'd like to know who the 4 are as well. He's done well for Wales and like it's been said, he is back up to Roberts and Williams, and decent experienced backup to be fair. Don't see the issue really, who's he keeping out of the side.

Watching Chris Gunter here is very difficult. It's as if he's a Make-a-Wish child being granted a kick about with his favourite team.

Matt Smith looks very, very talented.
