Under 18 result : Swans 1 Colchester 0 20:59 - Apr 14 with 261 viewsKeithHaynes

Any of our more informed posters like Jasper got knowledge on what seems a very young swans side ?

Official site -

Michael Murphy scored the only goal as Swansea City Under-18s overcame in-form Colchester United to secure their first victory under Byron Anthony.

The attacking midfielder bagged the decisive strike in the 25th minute at Landore.

Latching onto Harry Jones' low cross, Murphy took a touch before sweeping home his third goal of the season.

The young Swans were made to work hard in the latter stages against the visitors, who arrived in South Wales off the back of three consecutive wins.

But they held firm with Murphy's first-half strike enough to seal a first clean sheet of the campaign.

Anthony had made three changes from Friday's defeat at Barnsley.

Josh Hutchings replaced Tyler Evans in goal and Jones took Cian Williams' place in defence, while Ben Lloyd was also recalled in midfield.

Top scorer Cameron Congreve had the hosts' first sight on goal, but the midfielder shot over from distance.

At the other end, Hutchings was called into action with smart reflexes to turn away Tom Stagg's snap shot from outside the box.

But the Swans made the breakthrough in the 25th minute.

Murphy, who also found the net in the reverse fixture between the sides, latched onto Jones' low cross, before his shot was too hot for Colchester keeper Ted Collins to handle.

Fresh from scoring 12 goals in their previous three games, the visitors looked to respond before the break.

One of their trialists tested Hutchings from distance, while Stagg hit the side-netting following a strong run down the left flank.

The Swans went close to doubling their lead seven minutes into the second half, as Lloyd rattled the post with a well-struck first-time effort from Morgan Clarke's cross.

Lloyd also shot just wide on the volley following a good cross by the hardworking Iwan Morgan, while substitute Geoff Bony went close with a neat flick later on.

The hosts remained stubborn in defence with a couple of strong blocks as Colchester sought an equaliser.

But they held out for a hugely impressive victory - their first in eight attempts.

Swans U18s: Josh Hutchings; Harry Jones, Scott Butler (capt), Ryan Bassett, Jacob Edwards (Panashe Makokowe, 77); Joel Cotterill, Cameron Congreve, Michael Murphy; Morgan Clarke, Iwan Morgan (Geoff Bony, 69), Ben Lloyd.

4 u16s players involved (Cotterill, Lloyd, Morgan, Bony) but with players being told they're not getting pro deals and going out on trials elsewhere (like Cian Williams) this tends to be the time of year when teams tend towards younger lineups. More alarming when half this team were lining up for the u23s earlier in the season - by my count 7 of the starting 11 have already played at that level.

Next season progression could be tougher with the new academy head bringing in so many trialists to fill the older ranks. Definitely quality in that u16s group, though.

Presumably 5 trialists in the u23 means

five 17 s year olds moved down to u18 and

five 15 year olds moved down to U16.

With presumably better results to build up confidence. I am no expert but i am not sure of the value of 5 x 15/16 year olds getting hammerings every week at u18 level.

I think most posters on the forum know the reason why so many young kids from the academy's U15/16 teams were given opportunities at U23 level earlier in the season, but of the players who were in the U23 squad against Colchester - Butler, Congreve, Clarke and Jacob Edwards have regularly made U23 appearances through the season while the following have made sporadic starts, used from the bench or non-used subs. Kai Ludvigsen made regular appearances through the season and I am assuming he is currently on the injured list as he hasn't been involved since January.

Of those who were involved against Colchester.
H Jones- 1 start up to February but had been injured
R Bassett-a non-used sub since January
Makokowe - regular non-used sub since October
Cotterill-made appearances since February
Murphy-apart from occasional non-used sub made 1st start in December
Iwan Morgan and Bony- non-used subs in recent weeks
Lloyd-sub since February.
Non-used subs Ewan Griffiths, Dan Watts, Jada Mawongo-no appearances

First year scholars Aaron Hillier, Dylan Perkins and Josh Edwards have all made occasional non-used subs in the U23 matchday teams.
