Once again confusing staff shortages caused by coronavirus isolations with Brexit.

You do make yourself look silly every time.

The industry is apparently lobbying Grant Shapps to allow foreign drivers visas to cover the holes in the supply chain.

Any thoughts on that?

Might help to eases the shortage of drivers which has been ongoing for about 4 years. Exacerbated by no HGV courses, No HGV licence tests is last 18 months and of course people switching to shopping which has resulted in large increase in white van delivery drivers.

Coronavirus isolations have also increase due the everyone getting back to work.
Some supermarkets have also announced more staff are isolating so less staff to restock shelves.

A bit more complicated than saying it is due to brexit.

Poll: Sholud Wales rollout vaccination at full speed.

Not having staff to re-stock shelves is not a supply chain issue. That's the sort off guff that Bodger and Gove would come out with.

You do realise that pre-Brexit many of these drivers would not require visa, right? The clue was in the question.

Of course having staff sitting at home because of a coronavirus contact is going cause supermarkets problems in restocking shelves. Been to my supermarket this morning every shelf full. Wonder how many supermarkets the newspaper toured just to get its one photo of any empty shelf.

Stop blaming the results of a pandemic and all the problems it causes on Brexit.

I've been to the supermarket three times in last week, shops were quiet and fully stocked.

It is more complicated and there are a number of factors at play, but Brexit is a significant factor in the shortage of HGV drivers and it’s something the Road Hauliers Association were flagging up as soon as the criteria for visas etc was determined.

There’s a huge shortage of drivers and this gap was being plugged by migrant workers, but moving forward that door is (currently) closed to new arrivals. The average age of British truckers is 57 and its a job that doesn’t appeal to younger people as it’s “low paid” and there’s can be a requirement to stay away from home “tramping”. There also been a decrease in driving test availability and it’s expensive to get a licence.

Aldi have just increased their hourly rate for day work and night shift driving and I know of a local company who’ve given their drivers pay rises this year so they can retain staff. I reckon truckers getting the pay rises will be happy with the current situation, however those companies who are paying just over minimum wage are going to find it difficult to attract staff and they’ll have to pay more or lose drivers. The bottom line is that whichever way it goes, the consumer will see an increase in costs.

Wages are skyrocketing, which is great news for the Great British 🇬🇧 Workers.
Recently talked to a scaffolder from Bristol and he’s taking home £1,100 for a five day week.

Wages going up is good news because they’ve been stagnant for ages, but it has the potential to be a double edged sword because it could result some serious inflation and increased cost of living etc. Rises in interest rates to stave off inflationary pressures could, given the cost of housing and the proportion of people’s income spent on servicing mortgages case some serious issues.

That’s a decent wedge for a 5day week.

I totally agree with you. Have a few mates in the cops and they are facing a zero increase this year, (like your good self) factor in inflation and in real terms that equates to a pay cut. All this on top of austerity.

Vaccination rates per 100 of population

UK 127
Denmark 127
Belgium 125
Spain 121
Ireland 118
Portugal 115
Germany

Eu average 105 still 20 behind the UK

Croatia 75
Slovakia 78
Latvia 71
Romania 48

So much for the EU promise to share out the vaccines among all 27 countries equitably. Looks like the rich countries are looking after themselves in the EU.

Glad to see a few countries are nearly up with the UK as the UK reaches all those who want the first dose.

Good idea the army have helped out in the pandemic by delivering the vaccines and as well as helping to administer the vaccines.

Good to see the government preparing in case their are any shortages cusesd by panic buying and the pandemic.

No sign of any shortages in any local supermarkets so far.

Private companies can charge what they like . Roaming charges were only dropped by the EU in 2017 a year after the referendum .

Makes you wonder why the EU TOOK 20 years to drop them.

Good news no Roaming charges between UK and the ROI.

They weren’t dropped by the EU, they were outlawed or made illegal which ever term you prefer.

I agree with you about taking 20 years to outlaw them especially as we were part of a single market, however they did more than most national governments. Defo good news that there’s no roaming charges between Britain and the ROI, could have been a big issue re Ulster and the ROI.
