Under 23’s : Millwall 3 Swansea City 1 18:07 - Oct 19 with 692 viewsKeithHaynes

From the official site -

Three late goals saw Swansea City Under-23s beaten 3-1 at Millwall in the Professional Development League.

The Swans led for the majority of the game, but three goals in the last six minutes snatched the three points for the Lions.

The Swans started the game brightly with narrow misses from distance by Daniel Williams and Dylan Morgan.

Jaden Forrester had the ball in the net after 13 minutes as got onto the end of Rio Campbell's pass, but that effort was ruled out by the offside flag.

Millwall had a good chance to break the deadlock just four minutes later via Seb Drozd, but his effort was parried by Nico Hansen.

But it was the Swans who took the lead - a great passing exchange found Dylan Morgan on the edge of the box and he slid a great ball across to Lincoln Mcfayden and he buried the effort into the bottom right.

Mcfayden almost had his second of the afternoon just before the break as a fantastic ball from Jacob Jones found the left wing-back in space, but his thunderous strike cannoned off the post.

Millwall came out with renewed energy in the second half but struggled to form any clear-cut chances.

Tyrese Briscoe went closest with a long-range effort, but it was easily held by Hansen, while Scott Butler went close to making it 2-0 late on, but his strong header from Jones’ corner dropped wide of the post.

But with six minutes left of the game, Millwall found an equaliser. A low cross found Briscoe in the box and his low effort hit the post and went in to make it 1-1.

With one minute left of normal time, Millwall found a winner. Jayden Davis’ looping free-kick from a seemingly impossible angle squeezed into the top corner.

To add insult to injury, Millwall were handed a penalty in stoppage time, with Davis converting for his second of the day with the final kick of the game.

Millwall: Jordan Gilmore, George Walker, Kai Garande, Arthur Penney, Chinwike Okoli (Alfie Allen, 45), Besart Topalloj (capt), Jayden Davis, Ben Thompson, Tyrese Briscoe, Sean O’Brien (Abdul Abdulmalik, 68), Seb Drozd.

Unused subs: Joe Wright, Kyle Smith.

Swansea City: Nico Hansen, Scott Butler, Jacob Jones, Ben Erickson (capt), Tivonge Rushesha, Lincoln Mcfayden, Azeem Abdulai, Daniel Williams, Rio Campbell (Adrian Akande, 76), Dylan Morgan (Joel Cotterill, 64), Jaden Forrester (Tarelle Whittaker, 30).

Unused subs: Ben Hughes, Harry Jones.

From the Millwall site -

Kevin Nugent praised his side's second-half performance as Millwall's Under 23s were 3-1 victors over Swansea City on Tuesday afternoon.

The Swans held a 1-0 lead at the break, but late goals from Tyrese Briscoe and Jayden Davis (2, 1 pen) ensured The Lions' 100% home record in the Professional Development League stays in tact.

"We went in at half-time 1-0 down, and deservedly so," Nugent told millwallfc.co.uk. "It wasn't one of our better performances in every aspect. However, we stayed in the game and got to grips with things, pressing a lot higher and playing with more energy, tempo and intent.

"We kept getting chances without making the goalkeeper work, so we had to keep going - but credit to the lads, they did just that until they got the first goal. Then it just went from there.

"We had a lot of possession in the second-half, but there is always that opportunity to get done on the counter-attack when you're so on top. We were relentless at the end and the lads deserved the victory. I'm delighted to see Tyrese and Jayden on the scoresheet, too."

Although extremely knowledgeable I think O'Leary & to a lesser extent Wrighty might be at level too high for their abilities,

There was a new influx of highly touted players from London and the north. These lads do not seem to be performing. Over on the blue side the youth team full of Welsh youngsters are doing much better. Has something gone badly wrong at local level or is the club still playing players too young for their age group.?

Wise sage since Toshack era

Nothing wrong with the age profile of this side. Two of the used subs are u18s (Akande & Cotterill) but the rest full professionals. 6 Welsh-qualified in the starting lineup.

I see Millwall brought on that lad we were supposedly linked with in the summer, Abdulmalik.

Anyone who saw O'Leary as a player, listened to O'Leary's match day analysis of the Swans, would know he should be nowhere near our youngsters.

Club knows best though.

There is a long history of people who think our recruitment of local players isn’t as good as Cardiff City when in the main that has been entirely incorrect.

Our under 23’s are on fire this season I hear, top of the league and dusted charlton last night despite 3 or 4 of the better ones missing. Hope for the future here at last, just need a flipin manager who can bring them through- although I’d take Steve Morrison who manages them now allday.

'Swansea City legend Leon Britton has returned to the club to take on an academy role - one that could even see him pull on his boots once more.
Britton is returning to the club after leaving his job as sporting director back in June 2020, and will take up a player mentor role within the youth set-up at Landore.'
Leon, by his own admission, was never going to be an effective coach or manager so why has he been brought back? Did Routledge turn down a similar offer? Is the o'Leary's p[osition already seen to be beyond him?
If I was a youngster looking to progress into the professional ranks I'd look at a lot of other options first.

Poll: Should the summer transfer window close before the season starts?

Don’t think so…..someone did to Newport. I really want Morrison to be our manager, he and bellers had the kids playing good stuff. We need to rid ourselves of the Warnock style stuff and move on even if it’s results in a demotion

They've got a case these days, although there's still some funny stories about players they let slip away/almost signed in the youth groups - to our benefit in a few cases. Plus they very nearly lost Ruben Colwill last summer in their hesitation.

Five academy products in their squad tonight, two starting. Unthinkable they'd have managed that only a couple of years ago.
