How ?

You want to vastly decrease your chance of getting dementia then stop eating sugar.
Plenty of evidence out there. Also use ketones as energy instead of carbohydrates.

It’s a risk factor for some forms of dementia. In the case of rugby players it’s down to trauma of the brain. Low grade collisions over many years. Eating less sugar is a good thing, but high ketone levels are not so clever either.

73’s point is high sugar diets are associated with Type 2 diabetes and some forms of dementia. But ignores Type 1 is autoimmune and Type 2 has other causes too. Don’t blame then as The media reports an increased risk (a risk factor) as cause.

Ultimately cutting down on sugar makes sense.

And what levels is that ? Do you know what cells in your body cannot efficiently process ketone bodies for energy ?

Short term it’s no issue- even extreme ketogenic diets are fine for a few months. Long term it’s a pressure on the kidneys and liver to process and excrete excess can cause problems. Dangerous if there are any underlying issues.
Also depends on the fat intake in such diets- some are excessive and will,
Despite what the printer guy says, hugely increase risks of cardiac problems and stroke.
For some people it’s fine even longer term, but not without some risk-though clearly less of an issue than someone consuming a high sugar, high fat processed food-based diet. There are conditions where high protein in a prescribed diet (including epilepsy which led to the dementia studies) but others have low protein prescription diets.

Heard this every day for close to 20 years when the wife was a dietitian

Also 20 years ago when your wife was a dietitian, is so far back, it’s irrelevant.
Do you know anything about Yoshinori Ohsumi ?

There are a few doctors that now support a ketogenic diet, some even a carnivore diet, the keto diet consisting of good quality meat, fish, eggs, very low carbs with the only veg allowed are those grown above ground ie cabbage, broccoli, sprouts etc. Full fat dairy and very little alcohol.
I did it for 18 months, lost a couple of stone in weight and felt really good.
One doctor claims that the above diet can help to reduce the onset of some types of dementia.

No, she was a dietitian for 20years! Not 20 years ago. Oncology specialist. no- I don’t have much interest in nutrition- far too many quacks in that area and definitive studies are rare . My interest is in the role of sugar (and other things) on the microbiome partly as had to work through a colleagues case study on sugar receptors in the pig gut for REF (research evaluation framework) Excess sugar not too clever in this context either

Absolutely there are many doctors around the world who know that going into ketosis is good for you. If it wasn’t the human race would have died out a long time ago.
One way of entering Ketosis is to fast and by fasting, you also start a process in your body called Autophagy, where damaged cells including pre cancer cells are cleared out from the body.

You don’t need ketosisnfor autophagy but may well activate it better. World of difference between short and long term ketosis though. Fasting is also quite normal in many cultures and usually these have a basis in experience. Again, won’t suit all but if it works for you then why not

Healthy cells in your body can live off ketones, cancer cells basically can’t , if you keep glucose and glutamine levels in your body low, Not my words but the words of Thomas Seyfried
