There’s only one track left in the whole of Wales, a flapping track at that.
Friday nights at the old Skewen Stadium formed the backdrop for just about the whole of my youth. I’ve got a mass of happy memories of the open race nights and of the boys, many no longer with us.
I’ve had half a dozen Greyhounds of the years. Beautiful, gentle-natured hounds.

Animals trained for adult amusement and for them to win or lose money. That is the only reason it exists.
Id ban horse racing ,if I had the chance.
Both indefensible.
Yet,there is indignation over kicking a cat from people whos football clubs are kept alove by betting companies
Just a guess here but I'd say most greyhounds get injured Just running in any field where owners take them to exercise that is a greyhounds nature they have a burst of energy run like the clappers and that's them for the rest of the day they'll just lay at home all day
But as I said you'll find most injuries are from just exercise

Therein lies an issue with the sometimes 'patchy' veterinary provision at a flapping track.
A former colleague Carol(Vet and a researcher into welfare) had a number of hounds and had no compunction against racing at GBGB/GRA licensed/operated tracks and we had a few trips out to Belle Vue.
Like any animal-based sport it has good but sadly too many bad-as the Dog's Trust (and another former colleague) have shown:
I won't lie -I thoroughly loved a trip to the dogs or 'furry bingo' as Carol described it. But there are clearly issues that need addressing around welfare of these lovely animals.

I was talking with my brother the other night, another enthusiast, and we were saying that a proper GRA track centrally located in south Wales would be massive. There are bus loads of Welsh boys going to tracks, horse and dog, every week. A first rate facility on the doorstep would have huge appeal.
And, yes indeed. Professional veterinary services would have to be an integral component of that set-up.

It's not the racing I have an issue with, it's how the dogs are treated by breeders and racers. When their usefulness has come and gone many of these gentle creatures are treated terribly.

I tend to think there are more issues with the horses but seen as ‘respectable’.
A track within striking distance of the M4 would do very well. Dogs and all weather floodlight like Wolverhampton would do well. Ffos Las too far west. Must be a brownfield site somewhere between Cardiff and Swansea.

We settled on the Bridgend area, funnily enough. The M4 making for easy connection.
Floodlights, covered concourse, dining areas and bars overlooking the track. We’ve got it all sketched out, Prof...

Let's get that business plan written....
Something for everyone there.
Imagine a fully equipped veterinary block that catered for student placement. We’d qualify for grant funding. A flagship stadium creating employment opportunities for locals young and not so young.
Democratic too. Hound ownership would be within the grasp of works and pub syndicates whereas horses are a comparative pipe dream.
I’m enjoying this. 😊

I agree, but let’s not punish the good breeders and owners because of the disgusting actions of rotten ones.

Even better-get a partnership with Swansea University to build a Welsh Vet School-pre clinical in the city . Specialism in veterinary sports medicine. WAG money, tap up a few sheiks for the nags and away we go. Clinical training at the 'Campws Anifeiliaid' and buy up a local farm for livestock work.
The horse side is not so crazy as the Animal Health Trust closing in Newmarket removes the largest equine research facility in the UK.

I doubt Drakeford is exactly an avid reader of football forums but I hope he’s reading this!

This new stadium could also pave the way for the reintroduction of Speedway to south Wales. Not my thing but you’d have to believe there is a pretty big constituency for motor enthusiasts deprived of an outlet.
I tell you what, the more I think of this the more viable it becomes. Especially as a multi-use facility. Oh! to have the wherewithal to make ideas reality, eh?

It is only our lack of capital not making this a reality. Speedway always reminds me of World of Sport. Much preferred the rallycross on Grandstand though. The car park at work goes from tarmac to gravel which always puts Keith Rip and his mini at the front of my mind.

The GRA... Greyhound Racing Association.... was actually a private track owning company not a national association regulating, stewarding and licensing greyhound tracks and trainers that was the role of the NGRC... National Greyhound Racing Club.. The Greyhound Board of Great Britain now carries out this function I understand.
THe GRA also operated Harringay Ice Rink back in the day and ran the Harringay Racers and Greyhounds Ice Hockey sides, a number of the imported Canadian Ice Hockey Players of these two sides went on to work in the GRA's greyhound Tracks after finishing their Ice hockey careers.
NGRC tracks were regulated and all runners weighed for weight variations before a race in the track kennels and chromatography tests made on urine samples. All racing greyhounds have identifying tattoos on the inside of their ears and individual full identification books are presented before each race for race officials to check colours, markings and ear tattoo numbers to prevent ringers running.
NGRC tracks always had a vet on hand and stewards watching the races holding enquiries into vast improved or disappointing runs.
Greyhounds are incredibly consistent and will run round a track over the same distance, for example 470 metres, in a solo trial within a length or two, time after time after time, a length being worked out at 0.08 of a second so variations in running are very apparent after taking into account bumps or being blocked off in running.
Flapping tracks were and are unlicensed by the national greyhound licensing body and up until about the early nineties any NGRC registered dog or trainer identified at a flapping track was banned from NGRC tracks.
There is only one track left in Wales at Ysrad Mynach just outside Caerphilly which is an independent so called flapping track.

To be fair, you'd ban everything that you don't agree with, seems the cancel culture isn't only a young thing.
Fair comment Are you happy with people using animals for monetary gain and in the process oversee horrendous cruelty. Im quite comfortable with my views thanks/.
Pretty soon, the Great Belgian dinner plate event starts at Aintree.

Post war,Speedway was massive.80000 at Wembley on a Saturday night. It was the biggest summer spectator sport. Tracks were everywhere including Neath where the track adjacent to the Abbey saw the Welsh Dragons compete for the 1962 Provincial League. It was well located but sadly closed because of lack of public interest. Why is it people down there seem not to care about anything other than football and rugby (union) with cricket for summer.
Speedway tracks often inside a dog track but entertainment has changed and too many seem happy with playing video games at home.
Nothing beat the smell of methanol and shale in your teeth

Sick
In a rare state of affairs, I completely agree with you. Hate horse and dog racing. Biggest peeve is the Grand National
