About time the people were allowed to return .

It is disgraceful that the UK labour Government bowed to the Pressure from the USA in 1968 to forcefully evict the people just so the AMERICANS could set up their aorforce base at Diego Garcia.

Poll: Sholud Wales rollout vaccination at full speed.

🟥 the whataboutery is staggering in this clown.

You have not once been a critic of the absolute scumbags who are running the show at present.

Not sure if he’s a WUN or genuinely has difficulty understanding what’s going in the wider world.

The political situation in the 1960’s was completely different to the situation we have seen for most of the last 30 plus years. The Labour government purchased the islands and leased them to the US during the middle of the Cold War, the US and it’s allies were seeking to counter the expanding influence of the Communists states and the islands were strategically important.

You make the point about Labour (who were voted out of office in 1970), the subsequent Conservative Government under Edward Heath continued with policy of removing the Chagos islanders through to 1973 when the last residents left. During the following 39 years, we've had something like 26 years of Conservative government and 13 years under Labour, neither party have revisited the decisions made in the 1960’s and carried out through to 1973.

Since 2010 the Chagos islanders and Mauritius have made a number of attempts via international protocols/legal in Courts, the UN etc to secure sovereignty and the ability to return to the islands. Guess what, the British Conservative government have refused to recognise jurisdictions of the bodies, ignored exterminators in favour of atheism islanders and have consistently refused to allow the Chagos islanders to return home. Do you think the actions of our Conservative Government are disgraceful too?

Having regard to the current political situation which has developed over the last few months, I think it’s prudent the military facility is allowed to remain open for as long as its required by the allies to counter the potential threat to our security; however if it’s practical and feasible work should be undertaken to try and facilitate the return of the displaced residents who want to return to the islands. This would allow the base to remain and the islanders to return, hopefully a win win situation.

I agree there was no need ever to remove the inhabitants from the islands in the first place. The inhabitants displaced due to the building of the USA airforce base could have been relocated with the island group and compensated accordingly.

The islands were not purchased in 1970 they have been a Uk territory since
