Can't really compare annual running costs in one part of the UK with a capital investment project in an infrastructure that has lasted 159 years in another part of the UK.

Do you mean capital investment programs ….like the railway electrification to Swansea and the Swansea Tidal Lagoon ….?

Or maybe even HS2 where the welsh taxpayers are subsidising new railways in England ? HS2 generates additional funding for railways in Scotland and the north of Ireland …. But not Cymru ?

Why would anyone living in Cymru support this whilst the railway in Wales is screaming for investments, like a north-south link even…?

Wake up mun.

Fantastic news for our capital city.

Brilliant to see our Queen looking well there to open it, the Prince of Wales line should be the next investment for the capital 👍

The new line will be a major boost for the South East and will drive the economy forward and increase prosperity. There are a lot of evoke there and the improvements are needed. That said, huge parts of the UK have very poor public transport and major investment is needed, Wales is a prime example of that. Felix has mentioned Drakers reluctance to address the M4 around Newport and he’s right, Wales needs an excellent road network and public transport links if we are to prosper and we’re coming up short in both.
I was up in Ceredigion last week, there are some stunning locations but public transport is very poor and lots of people living in the small villages are dependant on cars, public transport doesn’t exist. It all needs a rethink, the bus services need to be brought back under public control and services coordinated like they are in a London, we can’t have 3 companies servicing a popular route and nobody providing a service in other areas.

As a person who has voted Labour for the majority of his life (until recently) the failure (or stubbornness) for Welsh Labour to acknowledge the need to improve the infrastructure into South Wales is embarrassing.

That with the state of the NHS in Wales it amazes me how stupid Welsh people are to continue to vote for them.

So ….. you think that the uk government should put railways into the Antarctic ?
You really are a funny one.

In stark contrast, the uk government has responsibility for Cymru - and Cymru has an immediate urgent need.

Ever heard of devolved power , if not look it up you may have a surprise or write to the "Prof" as you often call him and ask him why we have no alternative to the Brynglas tunnels.

Electrification, costing many millions to save a few minutes from Cardiff to Swansea.

And thank god we didn't have a tidal lagoon ruining our bay

Why would anyone use a North - South link? Are there thousands of would be Cardiff commuters in Bangor?

No one has suggested UK investment in infrastructure in Antarctica. Clearly you do not get the irony in reference to your post.

The UK government has offered investment in the M4 but Drakeford stubbornly refuses to take UK taxpayers money.

Yep.

The biggest issue with electrification is that they bothered going as far as Cardiff. The South Wales main line is far too wonky for electrification to be of any benefit whatsoever, yet for political reasons they went ahead with it anyway. Tens of millions, maybe hundreds spent to cut a couple of minutes off the journey between Bristol and Cardiff.

For electrification as far as Swansea to have been of any use they'd have had to build a new line between us and Cardiff, which would have basically reduced every stop in between to a branch line. Simply not worth the expense.

The idiocy of the Lagoon scheme has been done to death many times and only the terminally stupid or those in line to make a couple of quid out of the project still think it's a good idea.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Yes a straight comparison between a capital project to the operating costs in a different environment does not work. For example, we could have had 3000 nurses for the cost of the Senedd.

Innit.

There's no real reason or demand for any kind of high capacity transport links between North Wales and South Wales. In the North they already have easy links to Liverpool, Manchester and the Midlands. In the South we also have good links to the Midlands and obviously Bristol and London. Why would anyone in the South want to rush to Rhyl?

The eagerness that some people show to drive four lanes of motorway plus who knows how many extra trainlines through some of the most beautiful landscapes in Britain, just to serve some half baked theory about linking Wales together is absurd. If I'm going to North Wales I want to take my time and enjoy the trip.

I do the journey quite frequently and to be honest I really enjoy it , proper driving . There's enough straight stretches of road to overtake if your so inclined and once on the A5 its duel carriageway any way

Absolutely.
There is no real benefit to a North - South line other than as a tourist attraction.
A meandering, scenic route at a slow pace would be more use than wasting billions on a high speed line no one would use.

There's a stretch on the A470 near Trawsfynydd which is possibly my favourite bit of road anywhere. 60mph limit, almost dead straight with stunning scenery either side and hardly any other cars in sight. When I first did it I turned around so I could drive it again.

Any of the routes up are quite fun to drive though. Much better than yet another motorway. Besides, it's never going to happen anyway. The Welsh Gov are hell bent on making the roads we already have even worse to drive on. There's very little chance of them building even more.

The Wirral Swansea route along the 483 is scenic and also a pain in the @rse if in a hurry or after we have lost a game.
The geography is an issue.

It does make an independent Wales hard to accept as the north west is especially isolated.

Try the main trunk road ,A 470 from Caernarfon to Cardiff. 150 odd miles .4 hrs plus.In 2022.

Poll: Christmas. Enjoyable or not
