And in what must be a blow to people like Kilkenny, Drakeford agrees with Starmer because "the world has moved on"

https://www.walesonline.co.uk/

Starmer wants to move forward and stop dwelling on the past, Drakeford apparently believes exactly the same.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Lots of other countries have been in the same boat, sadly we seem to be lagging behind in lots of measures.
The pandemic had a huge impact on us and other countries, given our vaccination program was one of the most advanced and we came out of restrictions before many other countries it should make you wonder why we are lagging behind. Sadly, too many 🤡 will just lap up the same old rubbish been spouted without questioning things, we need to be more cynical and questioning of those in power.

The reason this country is in such a mess is because people voted for lies. Unfortunately, our main opposition party did very little to call out those Brexit lies and staggeringly (although I guess Corbyn was a lifelong eurosceptic) agreed with May that Brexit would work just fine outside the single market. They wanted 'a' customs union, not 'the' customs union *facepalm*.

Labour now support staying outside both the single market and outside the customs union, even after Brexit has turned out to be the mess that so many said it would be (anyone disagreeing is in denial or not paying attention - note latest polls showing only 16% think it has gone well - must have hit their heads).

Labour are lying to people. It's an attempt to sidestep Brexit fatigue and not risk losing votes.

Starmer says that he wants to just improve on the current deal by including services (while staying outside the single market) and solve the NIP issue (while staying outside the customs union). It's the same old nonsense that has been tried for years. It doesn't work. And to anyone with a brain, or anyone with a brain who cares about detail, it is obvious why it doesn't work.

Honestly, I think the UK gets everything it deserves. We're a nation largely made up of morons who don't 'do detail' and vote for the most awful politicians imaginable because the tabloids tell us to with anti-EU and anti-immigrant propaganda. As someone else just pointed out..now the fruit pickers and whatever else just come from non-EU countries, but we lost our rights throughout Europe for that.

So yeah. Labour are lying. There'll be a few years more nonsense about the NIP and the UK will be hit harder economically than our neighbours as already forecast (and already happening if you look at us versus Northern Ireland). That's if Labour get into power even.

Whether it's Labour or the Tories who head the new government they're going to be batting off another Scottish independence referendum because commitments to stay outside the single market mean that Scotland will vote 'Yes' and the UK won't exist as we know it (Putin's dream).

The biggest morons are people like you.
You obviously forgot the whole eu is one big lie, join the eec they said back in the 70’s a trading block, when it was always about political union, flag, anthem, army etc.
Fortunately 17.4 million freedom fighters were able to see through their bs.

Your hatred of the EU and how European countries developed to work in Union doesn't change a thing about the reality of the situation today.

There are very good reasons why only 16% of voters across the board think Brexit has gone well. There are very good reasons why there are STILL issues with that 'Oven Ready Deal' and why we are worse off as a result of it all. It's frustrating but unsurprising to see Labour lie about where things are at, but as I say, we are a broken country full of people who disregard detail.

I've given up on British politics. It will be a decade before the damage is undone and that's if the UK exists then as it does now. People voted for the most obvious of lies and then got upset when those elected on lies just kept lying. The next PM and cabinet should be good... just look at all these quality candidates. If I didn't know better I would think I was watching an episode of 'The Apprentice - Worst Bits'. Every one of them a self serving liar. Ben Wallace (originally a remainer), may...may...have been an ok-ish candidate considering the competition but he's ruled himself out of things.

Oh that’s how stupid you are, you are listening to opinion polls 😂
You obviously also haven’t given up on British politics as this very thread proves 😂
Also, you along with millions of others had the chance to live in the eu after Brexit, yet it seems you are still here in Blighty 😂

The polls have show a consistent fall in people thinking Brexit has been successful. Even if you don't believe the poll numbers, the trend is clear. And it's hardly surprising. Only the die hard numpties would say it's gone well given even those who signed the deal are begging the EU to renegotiate key parts of it.

It's telling that (as I've said is the case in the UK) you don't want to challenge the detail of what I've said about the deal being unworkable and damaging (NIP without the customs union, services without the single market), but instead want to talk about me. I follow politics and world affairs, but I've given up on thinking the UK is going to get any better for a long time. As for me living here, I posted about this previously. I actually was going to move abroad but my flight was cancelled during covid time when the Kent variant popped up. Had a job to go to but that relied on having FOM rights as it was a job outside of my degree area (gone are the days where a Brit can now go to the EU and work in a wide range of fields). By the time flights were possible again those rights had been removed. Now, it is infinitely harder to move where I wanted to/where I have good friend's. Most people still have no idea what has been lost. Young people will suffer. But also two years on and my personal circumstances and commitments have changed too even if it were simple.

We were promised referendums on Maastricht and Rome/Lisbon etc that were reneged upon. That sort of major constitutional change and the signing away of powers to faceless and unknown committees abroad like that is over and above the mandate of general parliamentary representative democracy.

As you say if it were as promised just a trade block where like minded allied nations trade goods, share resources and skills then I doubt there would be much or any opposition to it. But it has morphed into a superstate with an appointed commission which sends down directives that permeated into every facet of our lives. And not a single European citizen ever had a chance to vote for these people or are ever able to remove these people. They are accountable to nobody, and nobody knows who they are or what they believe in, what their motives are.

Rubbish.
Read between the lines.

Of course Starmer, recently cleared of any law breaking, does not want another rerun of Brexit. That would simply energise the Brexidiots.

Keir is a smart man.
By taking Brexit off the table, he gets to fight the next election on the issues where Labour are polling stronger.
This is about winning power from the English Nationalist Govt of Johnson, Mogg and Patel.

Wait until Keir spells out how he will ‘make Brexit work’.
Expect sensible policies that take down the barriers that Brexit has created.
Plus the situation in the north of Ireland will be sorted.

Yep.

I would vote to rejoin a Common Market tomorrow. Freedom of trade, freedom of movement, no problem.

Unfortunately this will never be enough for the Verhofstadts of this world. To them the endgame can only be an EU superstate, with its own army, currency, flag, and all the other trappings of statehood, only without that pesky democracy nonsense. People will be allowed to vote for MEP's, but actual power will always reside elsewhere. By design.

The plan was always to con the populaces of countries by pretending that it was about trade, then tying them in so tightly they could never get out. Failing that, witness the utterly cynical attempts to play on Ukraine's fears to get them to join the EU for protection when the key EU players had just spent a decade cosying up to Russia.

The UK has bucked that idea, hence their desperation to "punish" us and deter others from doing so in the future. The nightmare for the Commission is a Britain flourishing outside their control.

He might win power on it (as you say, he is sidestepping Brexit fatigue), but the Brexit issues will all still exist if he is being genuine about staying out of the single market and customs union. We've been through every scenario for years and it's incredibly frustrating that in this country we apparently never learn a thing and that dishonest politics is the way to try and win elections.

Read between the lines...more nonsense from you, when a politician says something you don't like you go down this path. You're always wrong.

I don't think Brexit has been a success yet but we have to take into account the world events that have shaped everything, Brexit isn't a failure yet and things are not going so well because of Covid and Russia's war.

What has improved, well unemployment for a start. It has fallen and employmnt is up.

Now the part about lies told by brexiteers, this is said over and over again and I'm not denying there were lies but, both sides told them, both sides are guilty of being stupid.

We still have the leave and remain sides arguing about this and both are as bad as each other. People who think the EU is so wonderful clearly aren't paying attention to their problems, Putin brought them closer together again but there are still arguments.

OHL, there wil have been some xenophobic types who voted leave just because but not ever leave voter was a xenophobe, it would be a daft thing to say. Some of the best people I have ever met have been Polish and there were 2 families from Africa who we became very friendly with, we both voted leave. We both love our non British friends. It doesn't mean we want to be ruled by unelected beaurocrats though, that is a political decision, not a bigoted one.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

That is an incredible statement.
It mean people who think differently to you are basically shamed by how they choose to vote.
It is almost beyond a reply excpet to suggest that we should simply ban the Party then and dimply have 1 -the Labour party ,that us pure, honourable at all times, and worthy of every single voter in this country.

We either want to live in a democracy or we don't. I do. I do not see those who vote different to me as being simply shamed or scum-which is what you're really saying.

We’re not a million miles apart on Europe and only differ greatly on how to fix it, and my obvious choice was reform from within, rather than to let Cameron’s gambling nature to decide our fate. At least there is acknowledgement now, even from the likes of Brexit ‘hardman’ (lol) Steve Baker that we should have stayed in the single market, which is all most remainers ever wanted.

Problem is I'm not sure the level of reform required is possible without tearing the whole edifice down and starting again. If the desire was there to keep it as a trading bloc then Maastricht would never have happened in the first place. Had a referendum been offered on that then the UK would in all likelihood have never joined the EU at all. We'd probably be like Norway or Switzerland.

Like I said. There's too many people like Verhofstadt in the higher echelons of all the participating countries. They want their European State and nothing can be allowed to get in its way, least of all the actual people who live in it.
